Our Story
Families and individuals experiencing homelessness are often invisible. We are working to raise awareness about the impact of homelessness in our community, address the needs, and advocate for policy change to end homelessness in our community.
In 2018, Pennington County counted 385 families or individuals experiencing homelessness during the January Point in Time Count--an increase of 22% over 2017, including 83 children and young adults between the ages of 18-24 experiencing homelessness. 31 of those counted were adults with serious mental illness, up from 24 in 2017 and 19 of those counted were un-sheltered. 102 of the families and individuals counted reported that they were experiencing homelessness for the first time.
44% of people experiencing homelessness are employed, but the average 2 bedroom apartment in our community requires the income of 1.95 full-time minimum wage jobs. Over 2300 people are on the waiting list for public housing assistance in Pennington County and the wait for public housing assistance in Pennington County is 20-24 months.
