This conference brings together community members, youth, families, educators, service providers, former gang members, and cultural leaders to explore:

• Why youth join gangs
• The roots of gang culture and identity
• Trauma, poverty, and community violence
• Prevention and intervention strategies
• Safe Zones and Peace Zones within our communities
• Pathways out of gang involvement
• Cultural healing and community accountability
• Building stronger futures for the next generation

Through education, honest dialogue, lived experience, and Indigenous teachings, we will work together to understand the challenges facing our communities and identify solutions rooted in healing, responsibility, culture, and hope. Everyone is Welcome!

I’ve never seen a gang member who didn’t carry some form of trauma from their past.

For many, the gang was never the beginning of the story - it was the response to pain, loss, violence, abandonment, poverty, addiction, abuse, fear, grief, displacement, or the need to survive.

Sometimes the gang became:

• protection when there was no safety,
• family when there was no connection,
• identity when there was no belonging,
• power when someone felt powerless,
• or numbness when the hurt became too heavy.

That doesn’t excuse harmful choices or violence, but it does help explain the human being behind them and how we can help.

If we only criminalize people without addressing the trauma underneath, we keep repeating the cycle generation after generation.

Healing-centered intervention matters because many individuals involved in gangs were first wounded long before they ever caused harm.

Accountability is important - but so is restoration, culture, connection, and creating pathways for people to become whole again.

For us, this is part of the reason that makes our own safe spaces like I Am Legacy matter: offering alternatives rooted in responsibility, healing, lived experience, and community rather than just punishment.
