South Dakota Mines ASCE Student Chapter

ASCE strives to promote the development of leadership skills, team building, and commitment to excellence in students' personal and professional lives.

The SDSM&T ASCE Chapter participates in many activities including the regional and national Concrete Canoe competitions, regional and national Steel Bridge competitions, local and regional Can-Struction competitions and food drive, highway cleanups, as well as various industry tours throughout the academic year.

The semester is over, seniors have walked across the stage, and internships are starting. Yet we are still reminiscing on what a great year it has been. One of the highlights was the 2026 Rocky Mountain Regional Student Symposium which we had the honor of hosting this year! Thank you to all the students, faculty, and volunteers who made this event possible! No matter what competition students competed in, they made sure to give it their all and it certainly showed. We got 2nd place in the competition overall and had multiple teams able to go to nationals and represent South Dakota Mines!

Competition Results:
- 2nd Place Overall Placement
- Concrete Canoe: 1st Place (in all categories!) and going to West Virginia for Nationals
- Steel Bridge: 2nd Place Overall and going to El Paso for Nationals
- Sustainable Solutions: 2nd Place Overall
- Construction Institute: 2nd Place
- Surveying Competition: 2nd Place Overall
- Technical and Non-Technical Papers: 3rd Place

Thank you again to everyone who made this possible and for all the hard work put into these competitions! We can't wait to see what our students will do next year!

It is almost the end of the semester... can you believe it?!?! We have had such an exciting year and want to celebrate it! Join us for an ASCE disc golf outing this Saturday, May 2nd. We will be meeting at Jackson Park at 5pm. Bring your frisbees and we will bring the food! Can't wait to see you there!

Only two days left until Regionals!! We can't wait to host this year's competitions and are anxiously awaiting the arrival of all the other schools. All competitions are open to the public and we would love for you all to join us! Here's a brief overview of the weekend's festivities but be sure to check the full schedule for specific event times.

We love local inspiration!! Our sustainable solutions team set up a tour of our local Black Hills Energy building to see how they balanced sustainability with practicality in their buildings. The team incorporated some aspects into their design and have so many ideas for next year's competition! Thank you BHE!

What a start to the semester! Our new officers started the year off with a fun trip to Chicago for the Workshop for Student Chapter Leadership conference. This multi-regional event allowed them to connect with other ASCE student chapter leaders and ASCE members working in industry. They came back with lots of good information and ideas, so watch out for some fun events coming your way!!

Regional Symposium planning is also well underway, and we are getting excited for April! You can almost always find a Steel Bridge member in the lab working on fabrication. Concrete Canoe had their pour day at the end of January and were able to go to the Concrete Conference in Deadwood. And don't forget about Sustainable Solutions, Survey, and Timber Strong who are finalizing designs and getting ready for their competitions. We can't wait to see what our Hardrockers present at Regionals!

Now that the cold is here, we are missing our sunny, summer internships. We had students working for BMI, Brosz Engineering, Coeur Mining, Hensel Phelps, SDDOT, Vivid Engineering, WWC, and more!! Even though we learned so much during these internships, we didn't forget to enjoy our summers and have some fun!
