American Legion Post 22-Rapid City, SD

Post 22 hosted the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Deputy Secretary Paul R. Lawrence last evening for a town hall. Dr. Lawrence is the Department's second-in-command and Chief Operating Officer. He was joined by several members of his staff, as well as multiple State level officers. Thank you for taking time during your visit to SD to speak to our local veterans!

Our 2025-2026 "Mr. Americanism", Lewis Carlyle, also joined the August Meeting to receive his SD State Oratorical Champion Plaques (one for him and one for Stevens High School...so they can place it in the trophy case). Lewis had an amazing year, winning a total of $8,500 in scholarship awards from the Post level, State Level, and National Level of The American Legion. We wish him all the best as he heads off to South Dakota State University to work on an Engineering Degree! We will miss you Lewis!

Five of our 2026 Boys Staters attended the Members Meeting last night to make their report to the members. L to R: Ethan Nelson, Noah Larson, Matthew Flanegan, Former Boys State Director Doug Harris, Matt Stewart and Lee Decker.
We also awarded the "big check" to Matthew Flanegan. He was our 2026 Boys State $1,000 scholarship winner. Congrats Matthew! A thank you to all these young men for representing us so well at SD Boys State!

We are opening at the normal time today (Saturday, 8 August at 11:30 A.M.) We are still working and the early folks will need to come in the South Side entryways, but everything is being put together as we speak. Looking forward to showing off our new floor. Thanks go out to Manager Jason, Kelsey, Doug Harris, Tom Smith, Randy Decker, Harry Rossander(for the donuts), Ryan Skjoldal, and Commander Dosch and everyone else who helped bring this together!

Good news everyone! It looks like we should be able to open tomorrow (Saturday the 8th of August) at our normal time 1130 A.M. Yes, it will smell like new carpet and a bit of glue, but it is really beautiful. There will still be a bit of work going on outside the bar area, so bear with us for a little while longer. See you tomorrow!!

Finally starting to see some new carpet! It looks awesome!! Also, Kelsey has been busy sprucing up the walls with fresh paint.
Still looking at Saturday for reopening...fingers crossed!
