Expanding Cancer Prevention, Screening & Support Across Tribal Communities

The Great Plains Tribal Health Comprehensive Cancer Control Program is working to expand access to cancer education, screening, prevention resources and support for Tribal communities across the Great Plains.

From community outreach and cancer support groups to wellness resources for individuals undergoing treatment, the program is focused on helping families access the information and care they need.

Join us Saturday, October 10, for the 2026 Indigenous Peoples Day Parade in Rapid City.

This year’s theme is:

“WE DANCE FOR THE PEOPLE”

We’re inviting tribal nations, organizations, schools, programs, businesses, families, and community groups to join the celebration and build a float inspired by dance.

Traditional dance. Contemporary dance. Hip-hop. Powwow. Social dance. Your own interpretation.

Show us what “We Dance for the People” means to you.

Festivities begin at 9 AM adjacent to Main Street Square with live performances by Antoine X and Rez Coast Griz to kick off the celebration.

The parade begins at 10 AM.

Great Plains Tribal Health would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family of Richard “Dick” Boyd Sr., on his passing. A founding member of the Mni Luzahan Wicozani Advisory Committee and a longtime advocate for the health and well being of tribal citizens living in the Rapid City area.

Dick played an important role in the creation of Oyate Health Center. He strongly supported the facility, even during times of trepidation, and offered thoughtful guidance rooted in facts, experience, and care for the people. Many people do not know Dick suggested the name Oyate Health Center, a name we proudly carry today.

Dick was a consistent and reliable presence at MLWAC and Great Plains Tribal Health gatherings. His kindness, insight, and commitment to improving health care for Native people earned the respect and gratitude of our leadership and staff.

We extend our sincere condolences to his wife, Mary, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who loved him. Dick’s service and legacy will remain part of Oyate Health Center for generations.
