Check out our new blog that dives into the history of these first seven years at NDN Collective!

In Lakota and many other Indigenous cultures, seven is recognized as a sacred number. We see it show up in various teachings, whether that is the seven directions or the seven generations principle. In this tradition, we viewed our seventh year as a time for reflection and renewal as an organization.

We hope that the lessons, victories, and stories shared in this blog help inspire and offer wisdom for all those across the globe fighting for a more equitable and just world.

We are proud to share NDN Collective’s Seven-Year Impact Report: Free the People, Heal the Land.

Over the past seven years, we have worked to build Indigenous collective power rooted in self-determination, justice, and love for our people and Mother Earth. This report reflects on both the victories and challenges that have shaped our journey.

Together, we have:
• Helped rematriate over 177,000 acres of land
• Granted more than $111 million to Indigenous communities
• Trained over 1,900 organizers in movement building and creative resistance

Relatives, these victories belong to all of us. Thank you to every single accomplice, donor, and community member who continues building Indigenous power with us.

Uranium Project Hearing Adjourned!

Yesterday, the Oglala Lakota Nation Youth Council stood with elders and uranium fighters, Alex White Plume and Lilias Jarding, Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, after the uranium project hearing was halted.

Craven Canyon intervenors filed a federal lawsuit against the SD Board of Minerals and Environment, adjourning the hearing around the Chord Uranium Project in Craven Canyon until further notice. The lawsuit was filed in response to the lack of due process around the board’s treatment of Lakota people during the Chord Project public hearing, including the board’s failure to produce a Lakota language interpreter for the hearing after agreeing to provide one.

Clean Nuclear Energy Corporation, a Canadian mining company, proposed the Chord Project, which seeks to drill 38 holes up to 750 feet deep near Craven Canyon in the sacred He Sapa (Black Hills, South Dakota).

Indigenous communities and environmental justice advocates in the area have been fighting attempts to drill at Craven Canyon since the 70s, as this is sacred land that has been utilized for Lakota ceremony for thousands of years. The site contains ancient petroglyphs and other sites which would be disturbed or destroyed by drilling activity. Further, drilling in the area could contaminate groundwater and bring irreparable harm.

This is a temporary win for the Oyate! Wopila to all involved! Stay tuned for more updates and ways you can help protect sacred sites in the He Sapa.
