Welcome to the Workplace Disability Network of the Black Hills (WDNBH)! We are a nonprofit organization that promotes the education and connection of businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals with disabilities. At WDNBH, we believe everyone has potential, and with the proper support, all abilities can thrive in the workplace. We aim to create a more diverse and inclusive workplace throughout the

Black Hills and South Dakota. We support and curate educational opportunities, events, and consultations to equip employers with the tools they need to succeed. We not only connect employers with prospective employees with disabilities but also provide them with the resources necessary to ensure their success. Every person has the potential to succeed when given the right tools, platform, and resources. During Black History Month, we honor the incredible contributions of Black individuals with disabilities who have broken barriers and made lasting impacts in their fields.

𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗮𝗻
Disability: Epilepsy
Impact: Harriet Tubman, known as the 'Moses' of her people, was a legendary conductor of the Underground Railroad. After a traumatic head injury caused her to develop epilepsy, she still freed countless enslaved people and later became an advocate for women’s suffrage.

𝗛𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗮
Disability: Deafblind
Impact: The first deafblind graduate of Harvard Law School, Haben Girma is a trailblazing lawyer and disability rights advocate. She has advanced accessibility and inclusion in education and technology, inspiring workplaces to prioritize accessibility.

𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗚𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗼𝗻
Disability: Deaf
Impact: As the first Black deaf woman attorney in the U.S., Claudia Gordon has dedicated her career to disability rights and inclusion, serving in key roles at the U.S. Department of Labor and the White House Office of Public Engagement.

These remarkable individuals remind us of the power of resilience and the importance of creating inclusive workplaces that empower everyone, regardless of ability. Let’s honor their legacies by continuing to champion accessibility and diversity.
