Going out to one and all - If a boy or girl you know would like to be in Scouts BSA, in the Black Hills Area Council, is age 11 but not yet 18 - or age 10 and in the 5th grade please contact me via messenger. We have an established boys' unit (Troop 1187), and we are starting a new girls' unit (Troop 8711) in the valley. You do not have to be in Rapid Valley to join, you could be in Sturgis etc. and still join our new girl's Troop or join our boy's Troop.

The Scouting program has specific objectives, commonly referred to as the “Aims of Scouting.” They are character development, leadership development, citizenship training, and personal fitness. Leadership development is also one of Scouting's eight methods contributing to both good character and good citizenship.

Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.

The mission of Scouts BSA (the Boy Scouts of America) is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

Scout Oath: On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

Scout Law: A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Most importantly we UNPLUG and have FUN with outdoor activities, while learning life lessons and skills by educating through action.

Please reach out if interested or if you have questions or both.

Looking forward to hearing from you all

Sarah

Way to go Wyatt - way to represent Troop 1187

16-year-old Eagle Scout Wyatt and his dad, Charlie, are part of the Black Hills Climbers Coalition and noticed a need for human waste disposal bags (known as wag bags) in Custer State Park's climbing areas.

Wyatt came up with a plan to design, construct, and place two bag dispensers and instructional signs in the climbing areas as part of an Eagle Scout project. His project was approved by the Boy Scout Council in December, and then Wyatt worked and planned until he was ready for install on April 30th.

Wyatt also successfully secured long-term commitments from several sponsors to supply the bags to keep the new stations stocked. Not only has he already done great work, but he plans to continue making a difference by volunteering with the Custer State Park trail crew!
