Uniting Resilience at the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn Victory Ride

June 26, 2026

Uniting Resilience was honored to attend the 150th Anniversary Battle of the Little Bighorn Victory Ride, proudly representing the Native Two-Spirit community.

As we watched the commemorative charge, we found ourselves asking an important question: How many Two-Spirit adults and youth were participating in this historic event? While we could not know the answer, it reminded us of the importance of visibility and ensuring that Two-Spirit relatives know they belong in these cultural and ceremonial spaces.

Throughout the day, more than 60 adults and youth approached our camp to ask questions, learn about Uniting Resilience, and share their own stories. We distributed over 60 Uniting Resilience business cards, connecting with individuals who were excited to see Native Two-Spirit representation at the event.

Many visitors shared that it was the first time they had ever seen the Two-Spirit flag flying at the Battle of the Little Bighorn Victory Ride. For many, the flag represented hope, inclusion, and a visible reminder that Two-Spirit people have always been part of our Nations, our histories, and our communities.

One of the most meaningful—and concerning—moments of the day came when a group of Native youth approached us. They shared that they had experienced hurtful and discriminatory treatment while staying in camp. They were looking for a safe place to talk, ask questions, and simply be accepted.

Their courage in reaching out reinforced why Uniting Resilience continues this work. Visibility is not simply about carrying a flag—it is about creating spaces where Two-Spirit youth know they are seen, valued, and supported. Sometimes, being present is enough to let someone know they are not alone.

This experience reaffirmed our commitment to increasing Two-Spirit representation at cultural gatherings, powwows, horse rides, ceremonies, and community events. Every conversation, every connection, and every person who stopped by our camp reminded us that our work matters.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who welcomed us, visited with us, and encouraged our presence. Together, we continue honoring our ancestors while creating a future where every Native Two-Spirit person can participate in our cultural traditions with dignity, safety, and pride.
