Announcing: This Year's Annual Rangeley Public Library Chalk Art Contest!
June 26th, Fri (rain date Sat, June 27)- 10 am -4pm
Rangeley Public Library invites all our young local artists to decorate the sidewalks of Rangeley! We accept all age ranges from 6-18.
This year’s theme is in keeping with our Children’s Summer Program, “Unearth a Story.” What wonders lie just below the dirt? You tell us! Or better yet, show us with some fantastic chalk art! Think digging, dirt, bugs, roots, treasure, dinosaurs, holes to the center of the earth- and anything else one could find hidden in the ground!
Artists will sign up at the Library ahead of time, then check in on the day to be assigned a 3ftx3ft square of sidewalk in town. They may use any chalk they bring themselves (we kindly ask for no oil pastels). The Rangeley Public Library will also be selling chalk from our Gift Shop in the weeks leading up and on the day of for those who can’t get out of town to pick up supplies.
Artists have from 10-2pm on the day to fill in their artist’s square. We suggest you arts bring water and wear bright colors. Judges will begin adjudicating at 2pm, and prizes will be awarded at The Rangeley Public Library at 3pm.

Last Friday, 5/22, the Friday Story Hour discussed gardens and growing things!

Ms. W. read “Ms. MacDonald has a Farm,” a story about the all the delicious fruits and vegetables that can grow on a farm, and what it takes to take care of them. 🧑‍🌾 🪏 💦 🌱 🌽 🫛 🥔 🍽️
She then read “Garden of Opposites” where we talked about all the opposite words that can be used to describe things in a garden. 🐛 🪱 🐍 🦋

We moved to craft time, where our young listeners made thier own plants with paper, scissors, glue and crayons. We discussed the different parts of a flowering plant- stem, leaves, roots, petals, stamen. ✂️ 🖍️ 🪴🌻

We hope you join us this Friday for another Storytime at 12pm! 📚

For any young vistors looking for spring time activities, we are tracking our weather with chalk drawings of clouds in the older children’s section for the rest of the season. We have also brought out our rock collection. Come check out our cool geodes, fossils, and much more! 🌥️🌦️☁️🌧️🌨️⛈️🪨🔎👀

Last Friday, 5/15 the Friday Story Hour discussed muddy pigs and all their barnyard friends!

Ms. W. read “Hogwash!”, a story about the futility of giving pigs a bath. Mr.Farmer was quite irritated by the end, and very muddy! 🧑‍🌾 💦 🐷 🟤
She then read “A Day at the Farm” where our young listeners learned about all the animals to be found on a farm and practiced their animal voices! 🗣️🐓 🐎 🐄 🐑 🐕 🐈 🐇

We moved to craft time, where our young listeners had the opportunity to use REAL MAINE MUD to paint their muddy piggies! 🐷 🟤 🖌️

We hope you join us this Friday for another Storytime at 12pm! 📚

We warmly invite local fathers to visit the Library on June 20th at 11 am with their kiddos. We will be building homemade kites together in the children’s room, and hopefully, the weather will allow us to go fly them at the park! Spend some time with your kids and other local fathers on this fun springtime activity, and take home an excuse to play outside with your kids all Summer long!

*Instructions and supplies included, feel free to bring your own if you would like

Please RSVP on our RPL Events Calendar

Join Maine Children’s Author, Cathy Ballou Mealey, author of Make More S’mores, the Sloth & Squirrel book series, and When a Tree Grows, as she reads her newest title “Fly Rod was First: Cornelia Crosby’s Adventures in Angling” for the children of Rangeley! Along with the reading will be a story activity and a Q & A session- we will have a box to summit questions in advance at The Rangeley Public Library.
“When Cornelia Crosby was born in 1854, there seemed to be as many fish in Maine as there were stars in the sky. As she grew up she got hooked on fly fishing, traveling from one camp to the next and catching as many as two hundred fish in a day! When Cornelia wasn't fishing, she was writing about fishing. Adventure stories by "Fly Rod Crosby" graced the pages of newspapers across the country. Fly Rod Crosby was a tireless ambassador for Maine, dedicating her life to the enjoyment and conservation of its streams, lakes, and forests.”
The book is appropriate for all ages but might be most interesting for ages 6-11. We encourage you to bring your little ones in to learn about one of Maine’s historic figures, then go down the street to The Rangeley Inn and Tavern enjoy activities at Rangeley’s Annual White Nose Pete Flyfishing Festival. Fun for all ages!
