Kennebago River Restoration Update ‼️
Starting September 1, 2026, RLHT will begin construction to replace two undersized culverts with open-bottomed bridges on Wiggle Brook Road and Bear Brook Road in Stetsontown Township, just north of Little Kennebago Lake. These temporary road closures (construction sites shown in orange 🟧 on the map 🗺️) are expected to last through mid-September.
Why replace culverts with bridges?
Replacing these undersized culverts with open-bottomed bridges offers significant, lasting impacts for native aquatic species such as our beloved brook trout 🐟. These conversions improve passage for fish and wildlife, and strengthen road infrastructure to better withstand increasingly extreme weather events. 🌧️
Reconnecting streams isn’t the only part of the restoration process. Another technique, known as “chop and drops,” adds wood 🪵 into streams to help restore their natural characteristics, flow, and create complex, high-quality habitat brook trout and other species need to thrive.
