Koinadugu District is a remote and poorly developed area in Sierra Leone, West Africa. With over 400,000 residents, it is the largest district in Sierra Leone, which is one of the poorest countries in the world. As such, education for most students, especially girls is an impossible goal. Due to extreme poverty, teenage girls are often married off and not allowed to pursue a post-secondary school education. Therefore, attending university is only a dream for those lucky enough to graduate from high school.
Koinadugu Development Corporation is a 501(c) charity founded by citizens of Koinadugu District who now live in Massachusetts, USA. Our mission is to expand the post-secondary educational opportunities available to young men and women in Koinadugu District. These opportunities are currently very sparse, and resources for creating new ones are nonexistent.
The members of KDC need to raise $100,000 by June 2018 as a first step to cover the costs of building an educational facility in the region. Funds raised will go toward the purchase of land, hiring of surveyors and architects. While some labor will be offset by local volunteers, we must also plan for labor costs. Ultimately, our hope is to build a university.
Over time, thousands of girls will benefit from this effort, greatly enriching their lives by providing promising futures and earning potential, and liberating them from forced early marriage. Having a university within the district means that even poor families will be able to send their female children to school with the eventual goal of finding work outside the home and building a life for themselves and aiding their families.
Please consider donating to this effort that is so desperately needed. The impact of this school will continue for generations as more and more boys and girls become educated and are able to lead productive, independent lives, thereby becoming role models for future students and benefactors of future schools.
