If you have not noticed, we started a new archaeological investigation at the Meeting House last week. The dig is in preparation for our plans to move and rehabilitate the Annex. The dig should be finished this week. We are still raising funds for the move and rehabilitation.

To celebrate the near completion of our last four years of preservation work, we are hosting an Open House October 12. We realize that this is a busy holiday weekend and therefore will be hosting another Open House in the Spring. However, if you have the time and would like a first look at the work we have done, please stop in. There will be a short talk at 2, 3 and 4 pm on the preservation effort as well as disclosing the solution to a mystery that has puzzled us for many years —the mystery of the boarded over windows.

Preparing for the new parking area started five months ago. Excavation was limited to 12" to assure the few unmarked burials in the area were not disturbed. The opening in the wall to the left is the entrance, leading directly to an ADA compliant parking area on the right. The rest of the parking area has about a dozen space as well as room along the wall for buses.

Pathways Tour Participation Cancelled
If you were planning to visit the Randolph Friends Meeting House & Cemetery during the 2024 Pathways to History Tours (https://pathwaysofhistorynj.net/tour-info/), please note that we have cancelled our participation due to ongoing preservation work. Due to weather and other delays, the new parking and paths will unfortunately not be completed in time to welcome visitors to the site during Pathways.

If work continues on schedule, we are tentatively planning an Open House on Saturday June 8 at 3:30 pm. The Open House will begin with a short talk on what was learned about the construction of the Meeting House when the siding was removed. Tours of the restored building and grounds will follow.

Over the next month, leading up to the Open House, look for additional posts on the current preservation work and some thoughts about future plans.

Preparation for installation of the porous pavers that will provide the foundation for the parking area. The pavers will allow the natural meadow grasses and flowers to grow, making the parking area for the most part indistinguishable from the rest of the Cemetery.

PARKING PLANS. The parking will be limited to the northwest corner of the Cemetery. An archaeological survey of this area confirmed that the parking will not impact the few graves in the area. A porous grid will be used to stabilize the ground but allow grass to grow so the parking area will blend with the rest of the Cemetery.

Paragon Restoration has begun work on a major project at the Meeting House that will include the addition of on site parking, new paths, and restoration of the exterior and interior. The new opening in the wall (below) will restore western access to the site, which was blocked in 1880 when the current wall replaced an earlier rough stone wall.

This past weekend the new roof on the Meeting House was completed. For those familiar with the old roof, the new roof looks almost too new for an old building. It will darken with time, so be patient if you liked the older look. Every 40 or so years, the roof has to be replaced to protect the interior.

This is what a 36" shingle looks like. When freshly cut, they are light in color but age quickly. The length is determined by the spacing of the boards to which they are nailed (battens). The spacing of the battens is known from the notches cut into the rafters. The special cedar from which they are cut should last about 40 years--about double the life of off-the-shelf shingles.
