It’s about time!

Switzerland just made a quiet but powerful change. You can no longer drop a live, conscious lobster into boiling water.

From now on, lobsters must be stunned before they are killed. That means they have to be made unconscious first. No more throwing them into a pot while they are fully aware.

This decision did not come out of nowhere. Scientists have been studying crustaceans for years. Evidence keeps growing that lobsters can feel pain. They avoid harm. They struggle to escape. They react in ways that are hard to ignore.

For a long time, this practice was treated as normal. It was part of cooking. Many people never questioned it. But just because something is common does not mean it is right.

Switzerland looked at the evidence and chose to act. They called the practice inhumane. They decided that even animals like lobsters deserve a basic level of protection.

The law also goes further. Lobsters cannot be transported on ice anymore. They must be kept in conditions closer to their natural environment. It is about reducing suffering at every stage, not just the moment of death.

This is not a full ban on eating lobster. People can still eat them. But the way they are treated has changed. And that shift matters.

It forces a bigger conversation. How many other practices do we accept without thinking? How many animals suffer simply because it has always been done that way?

Change does not always start loud. Sometimes it starts with one rule, in one country, that makes people stop and think.

This is huge for animal welfare in Mexico.

The country has officially banned dolphin entertainment of any kind.

No more dolphin shows, swim-with sessions, or therapy programs. The reform covers all marine mammals, including sea lions and orcas.

Facilities must stop breeding these animals for profit. The focus now is on welfare and conservation, not spectacle.

Current captive dolphins won’t be dumped in the wild. They must be kept under strict care and moved to sea pens where possible.

The law was approved by both chambers and published in the federal gazette. It took effect in July 2025 with clear deadlines and fines.

Operators have 90 days to file an animal inventory. They then get up to 18 months to relocate cetaceans to sea pens.

This is a turning point for tourism, too. Travelers can still enjoy dolphins, but in the ocean where they belong.

"The Netherlands has become the first country in the world to completely eliminate stray dogs and ensure that every dog has a home. According to Dutch Review, this milestone was achieved through strict animal welfare laws, widespread spaying and neutering initiatives, and increased public awareness about responsible pet ownership. Government-funded sterilization programs significantly reduced the stray population, supported by strong enforcement of laws against animal abuse and abandonment.

Birds Advice reports that the Netherlands stands out globally, as more than 200 million stray dogs exist worldwide. In Dutch cities, dogs can frequently be seen riding in bike baskets, resting under café tables, and traveling on public transport, reflecting a culture that integrates pets into daily life. The Netherlands is now regarded as a model for animal welfare, demonstrating how coordinated government policies, cultural shifts, and compassion can address an issue that many countries continue to face.

You know what’s quietly beautiful?

In Denmark, kids sit down together each week to talk about how to treat one another.

From ages 6 to 16, Danish students have a weekly class time called klassens tid. It’s a simple hour where feelings aren’t rushed, voices are heard, and small problems get solved before they grow. Kids learn to listen, include others, and speak up kindly. Teachers guide, but the heart of the class belongs to the students.

These moments aren’t about grades. They’re about growing up with empathy baked into everyday school life. It’s hard to measure in a test, but you can feel it in a classroom where a child notices a classmate is alone and moves their chair closer.

Kindness doesn’t stop at people. Danish schools use official materials to help children think about animals too. What does good animal care look like? Why does it matter? When children practice caring for living beings, they practice empathy in real life. It’s the same muscle, just stretched a little wider.

Imagine if every child had one protected hour a week to slow down, reflect, and practice being gentle with the world. That’s how you raise kinder teenagers. That’s how you build kinder towns.

Maybe it starts with one hour. Maybe that hour changes everything.

DO NOT USE CRAFT STRAW FOR CAT SHELTERS! Most of the craft straws are crushed/shredded and therefore don’t have the insulating properties needed. Other craft straws are bleached, others have a tacking substance that makes it sticky. It is not optimum for the purpose needed.

Fall is upon us and it’s time to start thinking about the Feral Cats and their outdoor shelters. As has been reiterated many times, the shelters should be filled with straw, not hay. However, craft straw is not appropriate either! The type you buy at Michaels, Amazon and other craft stores does not provide the insulation that is needed. You need to buy bales of straw from feed stores or landscaping companies or nurseries. Straw is a natural insulator that has been used effectively for centuries to keep people and animals warm. It is hollow, acts as a natural insulator, is not edible, It doesn’t absorb water and is not prone to mold. It is a natural insulating material. Hay on the other hand, absorbs water, is digestible, does promote mold growth and does not keep animals warm! Do not use hay, and be WARNED that CRAFT straw is often ineffective and inappropriate for the use in cat shelters.
