Through our partnership with LWI, not only are people in Sierra Leone receiving access to clean and safe drinking water, but latrines are also being installed/repaired.
Check out the before and after pictures of a new latrine which was constructed last fall at one of the main secondary schools in the area that has 700 students in attendance. The new toilet facility includes eight individual flush toilets for girls and eight units for boys.
The previous toilet facility was not only dilapidated, but it also did not have nearly enough room to accommodate all of the students. Because of the poor condition, many students would choose to defecate in the open grounds near the school or leave to use other facilities in the community. This new facility will not only provide a vast improvement to the hygiene situation at the school, but it will also aid in reducing the rate of school absenteeism, especially among girls who struggle the most to learn at an institution with a poor toilet facility. One of the students stated: “This is the first flush toilet we have had in our lives and this will help us to concentrate on our lessons. We will no longer rely on the neighbors to use their toilets.”
Apart from having access to improved toilet facilities, a hygiene and sanitation training was conducted at the school to educate the teachers and students on proper hygiene practices and how to take care of the new toilet facility. Various subjects were covered including proper hand washing, tooth brushing with paste or ash, how to keep the water clean, and how to take care of the toilet facilities—not only at the school, but also in their own homes.
