Handmade Especially For You

Handmade Especially For You Handmade Especially for You makes comfort scarves for women who have experienced domestic violence and have been brave enough to escape to a shelter.

Volunteers do all kinds of activities at their own homes to keep Handmade running smoothly during this pandemic. Some measure yarn, some wind Magic Ball kits, some knit and crochet comfort scarves, some wrap finished scarves. We need and rely on all who want to participate.

Handmade’s Mother’s Day shipping was spectacular. We shipped 2,740 comfort scarves, 62 shawls, 60 hats, and 190 amigurumi to 65 shelters for abused and homeless women. It was a whirlwind. Yesterday, Chris N, Sharon A and I packed up boxes for the smaller shelters; today Chris N, Ann and I finished up with the boxes for the bigger shelters. We had only 6 wrapped scarves left over. We did it!

Last Friday’s wrapping party made today’s shipping possible. We had a lot of scarves to wrap—a literal mountain, as you can see in the photos below—and we wrapped them all. Thank you so much.

We used the scarves we wrapped on Friday to fill the boxes yesterday. Today we emptied the shed of the scarves stowed away for future use. The future was today. And we’re not quite done. After we finished, Ann and I found a bag of hats I had set aside for a shelter that requested 100 scarves. But we didn’t have any more scarves, or so we thought. We did have a bin with unwrapped scarves that we apparently missed wrapping last Friday. Sharon A dropped in to help me wrap them. She also brought unwrapped scarves from boxes she had recently opened. Evelyn came by to pick up kits. She brought a bag filled with finished scarves. We’ll wrap them and include them in the box for this shelter. I turned in all the scarves I had finished that hadn’t been wrapped. Elizabeth will wrap scarves she had set aside for quality check. Voila. Almost 100 scarves. Amazing. We have so many dedicated participants. Thank you all so much. ( Tomorrow I will send the scarves and hats to the shelter we overlooked. Their numbers are not included in today’s shipping numbers. Wow!)

Now we need more scarves. Why do we need them? Didn’t we just make and ship a zillion (or at least 2,740)? Can’t we just sit back and relax for a while? We must be realistic. It took a lot of work on all our parts to make all the scarves we shipped today. We will need an equal or greater number for back to school and holiday. But our inventory is ZERO. We need to replenish so we’ll have scarves enough to send to the shelters for those occasions, always our biggest shipping. We have plenty of hats, so please concentrate on making scarves. It feels so good to provide every shelter with the number of scarves (and hats) they requested. We don’t want to let any of them down. KEEP YOUR NEEDLES CLICKING. Remember, every scarf counts, especially YOURS.

Thanks to all of you who made this great shipping possible.

WISEPlace, a shelter for abuse survivors in Santa Ana, yesterday gave Handmade their "Volunteer of the Year" award. Fun event. We learned a lot about the good work WISEPlace does. They deal with a thorny problem. After a woman graduates from their program, she goes out to find a place to live, and--you guessed it. In CA, very hard to find an affordable place to live, especially for an entry level job seeker. They have come up with very creative solutions, on a very small, individual level, but even one at a time, it's a solution. We were proud to be there.

OK. Hooray!!! We did it. Today we shipped 440 comfort scarves and 4 blankets to 8 shelters. And—that put us over the top, or at least over 200,000 comfort scarves shipped to 70+ shelters for abused and homeless women throughout CA (since 2008). What an accomplishment!!!! It took all of us—donors, measurers, winders, knitters, crocheters, wrappers, and shippers--to do this. Many thanks. Congratulations to all. Give yourselves a BIG pat on the back.
But we're not done. Handmade’s mission is to help abused and/or homeless women, teens and children who have sought the protection of a shelter. Our numbers grow every time we ship. They are amazing: since the end of 2008 when we started, we’ve shipped 200,124 comfort scarves, 20,767 hats, 4,332 baby items, 221 shawls, 141 blankets/afghans, and around 255 amigurumi. Evidently, no matter how many comfort scarves and hats we make and distribute, there still are more women, teens and children who need them. KEEP YOUR NEEDLES CLICKING!!! Thanks for all you do to help these vulnerable members of society.

Last year, for the holidays, we shipped 2,799 comfort scarves, 522 hats, 104 baby items, and around 200 amigurumi to shelters for abused and homeless women throughout CA. We received back so many thank you letters. Here are snippets from some of them. I want you to know how valuable our scarves and beanies are to those who receive them!

THANK YOU!
2025 was one of Handmade’s very best years. We shipped a lot to the 70+ shelters we serve: 11,039 comfort scarves, 1,832 hats, 104 baby items, 66 shawls, 27 blankets, and around 200 amigurumi. We did it thanks to YOU. Everyone of YOhU who participate in our project, no matter what you do. We reach our goal one scarf at a time: YOURS.
We depend on many volunteers.
We depend on measurers, who measure the fun fur and B yarn.
We depend on the winders, who assemble the Magic Ball kits, which include fun fur, A yarn and B yarn.
We depend on knitters and crocheters, to transform the Magic Balls into beautiful comfort scarves.
We depend on wrappers, who prepare finished scarves for shipping by dressing them in colorful curling yarn.
We depend on shippers, who pack the boxes which we send to the 70+ shelters for abused and homeless women we serve.
We depend on donors for yarn and $$$$.
We depend on many others, who open boxes, separate finished scarves from plastic bags, print gift tags, punch the holes in gift tags, do the books, manage the website, and this isn’t all. Sorry if I missed any.
We’re a great team. Thank you everyone!!!
Give yourselves a pat on the back!

GOOD NEWS AHEAD FOR HANDMADE:

Let’s end with some good news. We have clicked our needles a lot since we began at the end of 2008. Our “numbers” are impressive. Since we began, we have shipped 197,309 comfort scarves, 20,397 hats, 4,332 baby items, 221 shawls, 137 blankets/afghans, and around 200 amigurumi. We shipped our 100,000 scarf in October, 2018. Probably in March, 2026j we will ship our 200,000 scarf. Amazing. We’ll have a big celebration. Hope you’ll join us.

I am happy to share Handmade’s holiday shipping news and exciting year-end report. Sit down when you read this. The numbers are astounding!

Yesterday, we shipped 2,549 scarves, 447 hats (kids and adult) and 200 amigurumi to 63 shelters for abused and homeless women (and children and families). Wow. You can see the enormity of our effort in the photo below.

This is really a great moment for all of us. What we accomplished is amazing. We couldn’t have done it without everything YOU did to make it happen. Thank you!!!

The totals since we started at the end of 2008 are equally impressive: Since then, we shipped 197,059 comfort scarves, 20,322 hats, 4,228 baby items, 221 shawls, and 129 blankets/afghans.

In 2025 alone, we made and distributed 10,759 scarves, 1,777 hats, 66 shawls, 19 blankets/afghans, and 200 amigurumi.

How did we accomplish so much—one scarf or hat at a time, most probably YOURS! Generous donors supported our efforts with both yarn and $$$. Teams of measurers and winders made the Magic Ball kits that you knitted and crocheted. The fun group of wrappers prepared everything for shipping. And our ace team of shippers put everything into boxes and UPS trucked them to the shelters. We’re a big, well peopled village. It takes every one of us. Some contribute every day, some once a week, some once a month, some one time only. Every contribution helps. Whatever you contributed, many thanks. Yes, yes. Give yourself a big pat on the back. We couldn’t have done all this without YOU.

Now we have a brief break for Thanksgiving. And then back to our usual activities. KEEP YOUR NEEDLES CLICKING. We never have enough.
Love,
Leslye

It’s still October so it’s still Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I shared what I wrote to you last week with our greater mailing list and had many responses. Most were very positive, offers to join, make scarves, hats, donate, etc. A few questioned why an organization such as Handmade, which specializes in comforting domestic violence survivors, would bother donating to shelters for homeless women. The way I see it, homeless women are also victims of abuse. A good percentage of them fled an abuser, but couldn’t find a bed in a shelter, didn’t have a plan, didn’t have financial resources, and thus became homeless. Others, who may be on the street for reasons totally unrelated to domestic violence, experience abuse, trafficking, and r**e once they arrive on the street. So they too are victims of abuse.

In Los Angeles County (and everywhere else) there are not enough beds for all the women (and for sure all the men) who need them. About 30% of 60,000+ homeless in LA County are women, for whom there are between 3,000 (actual) and 12,000 (a new goal just set at the beginning of this month, a hopeful number, not actual) beds available.

Yes, Handmade supports homeless women and here’s what we do. We send 250 scarves to one shelter 10 months a year. That’s 2,500 scarves. We send 50 scarves to 2 other shelters on a quarterly basis. That’s another 800. Do the math. The number of scarves we provide to shelters for homeless women (about 3,500 scarves per year) is a drop in the bucket compared to the number of unhoused women (18,000). The predicaments of abuse survivors who have been lucky enough to find a bed in a shelter and women who have not yet found a bed but are experiencing abuse on the street are closely related. I hope receiving one of our beautiful comfort scarves makes them all feel better.

Therefore, keep your needles clicking. We never have enough. Too many women and children need what we make.

The (shipping) beat goes on. Very good news. Yesterday, Elizabeth, Ann and I completed Handmade’s October shipping. Not huge, but big enough. We sent 600 comfort scarves and 285 hats/beanies to 11 shelters. Good job. What’s amazing is how our numbers are going UP, UP, UP. Since Handmade started at the end of 2008, we have made and distributed 194,510 comfort scarves and 19,875 hats. This year alone, 8,210 scarves and 1,330 hats. And we’re not done yet! Shelters have requested scarves and hats for their upcoming holiday parties.

Really, why do we need so many comfort scarves and hats/beanies? Let me use the occasion of "October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month" to tell you. The shelters use this month for fund-raising, especially now since Federal funds have pretty much dried up, and raising awareness about domestic violence in the community at large. If you’re new to Handmade or haven’t read one of my “October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month” reports recently, here is the gist of what I have learned over the years since Handmade started.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone, and survivors of domestic violence include people from every gender, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. No ethnic or religious group is exempt. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 29% of women (nearly 3 in 10) have experienced r**e, physical violence, and/or stalking by a partner. Younger women aged 18-24 have the highest incidences of domestic violence.

Domestic violence is the mistreatment of one family member or intimate partner by another. The abuse can be physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and psychological. In all the years we’ve been doing Handmade, I’ve spoken at several meetings about Domestic Violence, presuming always that the people in the audience were untouched by this terrible scourge on our society. However, every time, more than one woman comes up to me afterwards, telling me how my words echo experiences in her life, how she escaped, and what her life has been like afterwards.

It is “what her life has been like afterwards” that inspires me. This is where Handmade comes on the scene. We cannot prevent domestic violence but we can help a woman escaping from it by giving her the gift of one of our beautiful comfort scarves. Receiving this gift helps her feel that she is a valuable member of society, worthy of having a future without abuse. It gives her the strength to decide to undergo the education and therapy that will enable her to live an abuse-free future. This result makes me feel powerful. It tells me that I can do something to alleviate the abuse survivor’s pain (even if I can’t prevent the abuse).

I don’t need October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month to be aware of domestic violence. I think about it when I sort yarn, make kits, knit, wrap, and everything else I do to make comfort scarves and get them to shelters for abused women. And I think that is the case for you, too. Making comfort scarves for abuse survivors creates a symbiotic relationship between us, the makers, and them, the receivers. We feel better making comfort scarves and they feel better receiving them. What a wonderful experience, all around!

Keep your needles clicking. We never have enough. As you have read above, too many women and children need what we make.
