If you’ve been following along, you know we’ve been waiting for our baby killdeer birds… and this morning, all 4 eggs hatched 🐣

It’s always amazing to witness nature up close like this. Watch to the end to see something really special, the father doing his classic act, pretending he’s hurt to distract predators and protect his babies. It’s one of the coolest survival instincts you’ll ever see.

Nature is incredible, and we’re so lucky to experience it right here at the garden 🌿

🌿 Summer Fun at The Root 66 Garden

The official programs running at The Root 66 Garden include:

FoodShare Educational Co-Op

A hands-on, community-centered family program. Members commit to 4 hours of monthly garden upkeep and attend an agricultural workshop. In exchange, families share in the organic produce, honey, and egg harvests.

Root 66 Rangers (Kids Program)

An outdoor experiential summer program tailored for children ages 4 to 12. Kids become active caretakers of the land by learning to grow food, completing creative projects, and directly feeding the resident chickens and ducks.

Free Workshops

Community educational sessions hosted by local experts covering specialized environmental and practical skills. Topics focus on sustainable backyard agriculture, composting, soil biodiversity, and plant-based nutrition.

Volunteer Opportunities

Community workdays open to individuals, families, and corporate groups looking to give back. Volunteers support the private non-profit garden layout by maintaining shared growing plots, building infrastructure, and prepping food bank donations.

Here's a simple and delicious roasted turnip recipe:

Roasted Turnips with Garlic and Herbs

Serves: 4

Ingredients

1½ lb (700 g) turnips, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

2 tbsp olive oil

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp dried thyme (or 1 tbsp fresh thyme)

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp black pepper

1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)

1 tsp lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).

2. In a large bowl, toss the turnips with olive oil, garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper.

3. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet.

4. Roast for 25–30 minutes, stirring halfway through, until tender and golden brown.

5. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with parsley and a little lemon juice if desired.

6. Serve hot as a side dish.

Variations

Honey-glazed: Add 1 tablespoon honey before roasting.

Parmesan: Sprinkle grated Parmesan during the last 5 minutes of cooking.

Mixed root vegetables: Roast with carrots, parsnips, or sweet potatoes.

Turnips become sweeter and milder when roasted, making them a great substitute for potatoes in many meals.

❤️Guess who made the garden their home?

A male Hooded Oriole was spoted this week at the Garden. We could identify him right away by his bright, lemon-yellow "hood" and belly, his black wings accented with white wingbars, and that distinct, sharply pointed black mask and throat bib.

They are incredibly common in backyard settings throughout Rancho Cucamonga and the Inland Empire during the spring and summer months, especially wherever people keep ornamental palm trees or hummingbird feeders.
