A new study at Cedars Sinai reveals the possibility that a simple blood test measuring glutamine might be able to pinpoint when androgen-targeted therapy is failing in a prostate cancer patient... and can even predict when therapy resistance will occur!

Scientists at Cedars-Sinai have discovered how prostate cancer can sometimes withstand and outwit a standard hormone therapy, causing the cancer to spread. Their findings also point to a simple blood test that may help doctors predict when this type of hormone therapy resistance will occur.

We were able to meet up with Alex, Heather, and their beautiful new born son Etienne this week to deliver a few gifts, sponsored by the generous donations Collecting Quarters for a Cure received from all of you for the Sonoma County fire victims in October.

While we are sad we could not do more, it filled our hearts with joy to be able to assist in some way to help them on their road to reassembling the pieces from the rubble and starting fresh.

We are happy to say they are almost set to break ground on their home rebuild very soon, and we wish them all the best in health and happiness that life has to offer in their endeavors... but with their positive attitudes, and joyous spirits, we have no doubts that this family will rise from the ashes with even greater strength than before.

Quarters for a Cure wishes to convey a deep thanks to all of you for your generosity, who made these gifts possible, and proved that there is still kindness and goodness in the world.

All our best,

CQC

While it is by all accounts a "new year", I know that some of you out there will still be dealing with ghosts from years past, and for others of you (or your loved ones) this may be the last time you celebrate a "New Year".

For those of you dealing with the literal and emotional scars from cancer, for those of you still fighting the good fight, and most of all for those of you who may lose a loved one, or your own life, this year to cancer... my heart is truly with you, your family, friends and loved ones.

Cancer, in its many forms, is a nasty beast, and the cure most times isn't much prettier. For those of you who have survived, I ask you to show gratitude and thanks for the second chance you've been given, and remember the support you received and how it helped you pull through. For those of you whom have lost a loved one or have someone who is losing this battle, I ask that you let go of blame, fear, anger, and sadness; and that you let love fill your hearts.

Love, for the memories of those who have passed and for all the good times you were fortunate enough to have shared with them. Love, for those who are going through hell right now, because your love, laughter, happiness and support are all that they have, and all that will help them through this journey until the end. And love, for your friends and family, because LOVE is the only true currency in this world that holds any value over time, and it's the only thing you can receive more of the more you give it away.

I hope you all have a happy "new year" everybody; one that it is filled with endless amounts of love!

While undergoing treatment, patients who are unable to stay nourished tend to do worse and are less likely to tolerate the full therapy. Here are some recommendations from a registered dietitian that will help you work through the difficulties you are likely to encounter during your treatment, and still continue to get the nutrients you need to improve your outcomes:

A genetic test that helps doctors determine how best to treat breast cancer — and whether chemotherapy is likely to help — is significantly more likely to be administered to white women than blacks or Hispanics, a Yale University study has found. The test, called Oncotype Dx, uses gene expression to...

Chemotherapy... and the side effects you can expect.

What's NEWS in Cancer?

Researchers at Kumamoto University, Japan, are finding ways to reduce the radioresistance of cancer to increase the efficacy of radiotherapy.

Some cancer cells are protected from radiation therapy through an interaction of interleukin-6 with the Nrf2-antioxidant pathway, researchers have found. The discovery is believed to improve methods of increasing cancer's radiosensitivity.

"Death and Taxes" may be the only things we can't avoid, but maybe we can delay them... with innovative research like this out of London which is helping to boost our own immune systems to fight off deadly tumors.

Cancer scientists have genetically modified the immune system to help them attack tumours in mice.
