This time of year is a time to make some special memories. Dad, as we head towards Father's Day, take some time with your young athlete.

Watch List:
College World Series for Rancho Cordova Little League ballers....

FIFA World Cup for Rancho Cordova Soccer Club ballers...

UFC 250 for the fight game and future Cordova Combate Clubbers.

Does not have to be for hours... even just for a few minutes. My best memories with my Pop were watching baseball and boxing. If only I had those moments back!

Great athlete. Great Family. Levi gets it. If only more student-athletes understood.

Great athlete. Great Family.

Levi gets it. If only more student-athletes understood.

Several years ago, I was asked a question on a podcast: “How will you know if you’ve succeeded?” I didn’t talk about championships. I didn’t talk about trophies. I didn’t talk about participation numbers. Instead, I gave a simple answer:

Coaches, Managers, Leaders, and Parents,

This was important for me to write. In this 3-part series, Part 2 offers a glimpse into the minds and hearts of athletes' parents. At times, it was hard to write. It was sobering to reflect on how sometimes the sacrifice is massive!

Best,

Jason

The best parents in youth sports don’t make the game about them. They absorb the pressure, so their kids don’t have to. They carry the cost, so the moment stays pure.

This post is all about gratitude. Often, we are so in tune with our students' needs that our demands and difficulties get deflected onto the coach. Sometimes, they just need a thank you.

I remember the coaches who changed my life with distinct accuracy. They weren't the easiest. Actually, some of the hardest. But I knew they cared.

1. Sierra College Baseball: Head Coach, Steve Eakes
The motivation of Lombardi, the clarity of Lincoln, the passion for winning of Bobby Knight (without anger issues), and the character of John Wooden. To this day, Steve Eakes holds the one spot. "Believe and overachieve."

2. Sierra College Baseball, Pitching Coach, Keith Ballard
"Bal" had the ability to see in me what I couldn't see. His confidence in me stretched me to believe more in myself.

3. Oak Ridge High School, Coach Pat Nunes
A West Point alumnus, he would use the Socratic method to ask questions that lead you to the right answer in the field. In the classroom, American History came alive and made me want to learn and know the Constitution.
Re: Mental Toughness: He told me, "When all of your names, habits, support, and associations are stripped away, and you are all alone, you find out who you are." That echoed through my ears hundreds of times in a twenty-year ultramarathon running career.

4. American Legion Post 119, Head Baseball Coach Gene King
A second father to me. Verbally direct, at times sounding harsh. But away from the grind, he could pull it out of me from a more cerebral level. And with a single look from the dugout, cause me to tremble on the mound.

5. Former USMC Baseball Player and Best Friends Pop, like Coach King, Mr. Cather could look at me and say, "What were you thinking, throwing that?" And he never had to murmur a word! In the summer going into my senior year, I was asked to learn to pitch. And Len Cather was Yoda. He took a kid who had never pitched and, in the Fall before the final season, convinced me I could pitch. In my senior year, I learned he was right.

You don't have to write a comment. But if you had a coach of any sport at any level who made you better, please comment below.

Simply write, "Thanks Coach _______!"

And Yet Still, I Coach
