Next up for the NWTF San Diego Chapter is the drawing for the Paul Connor youth mentored turkey hunt on the Santa Ysabel East Preserve...The date is March 7th at the VFW hall in Ramona...Start time is 9:00 am....Let's get those kids in the woods...👍

Never too early to start scouting...Got up to the mountains at grey light and stopped at my 1st spot (Got permish just last year)...I hit the peacock call and boy did they go off...Obviously, I didn't put a visual on them, but there were a bunch.

Next stop is a place I don't get to hunt, but I always like to check to determine recruitment...Instant gobbles, but not as many as I thought there would be...No jake gobbles...So, they were away from the main flock.

From there, I hit the MCC and Henshaw spots...Whoever gets drawn for the those hunts at the NWTF Spring Turkey Tune-Up (Feb 21st) will have a great opportunity at a bird.

Next up was the Mesa Grande zone...As usual, lots of birds seen...Strong recruitment and carryover.

Finally headed for the Julian zone...Saw jakes and a goodly amount of longs...The winter flock up is in full swing and the big boys with all this warm weather are in full display and will gobble at just about anything,...If you're out scouting...Don't use your box call for a locator...Crow, peacock, duck, goose, varmint calls will all work for shock gobbles.

ps...The one thing I have noticed the most is the amount of 2 year toms...This is what you get when you pass on jakes...What develops is, a larger and farther dispersal this spring (Having early rain helps too)...This equates to a lot of public should have birds.
