🌳 Tree Huggers Wanted!

We pass hundreds of trees on our way across campus, but how are they doing?

Join NC State’s Pack Science Challenge, Oct. 12–16, and help collect tree data to support campus forest management. Your observations will help NC State’s Urban Forester better understand and care for the campus tree canopy.

A partnership between NC State University Libraries and the Leadership in Public Science cluster’s Citizen Science Campus program, the challenge invites students, faculty, staff and campus partners to contribute to real scientific research. 🌱

💧⚡ Which Tri-Towers community will take the title?

Throughout October, residents of Carroll, Metcalf and Bowen are competing to see which hall can make the biggest reduction in energy and water use.

Hosted by the Sustainability Stewards, the Energy and Water Competition turns everyday habits into measurable results, while helping students build practical sustainability skills and connect with their neighbors.

The competition runs through Oct. 31, with results shared weekly. Last year, Metcalf took the win with an 11.4% reduction in resource use.

Who will take the title this year? 👀

This October, residents living in the Tri-Towers will take on the annual Energy and Water Competition at NC State.

⚡ NC State researchers are pushing power transformer technology forward.

In collaboration with the New York Power Authority and EPRI, NC State designed and tested a 1-megawatt solid-state transformer under real-world conditions. The prototype was built and deployed by NC State students and faculty and demonstrated on a live utility distribution feeder.

A major step toward a more efficient, flexible energy future. ⚡

The demonstration underscores the technology’s potential to improve energy efficiency, losing half as much power as conventional transformers.
