Nonprofits help people plan for all kinds of things: appointments, applications, school schedules, work, you name it. Voting can use a little planning, too.

The U.S. Census Bureau has extended the public comment period for proposed changes to the 2030 Census until November 2, 2026.

These proposals could affect how people are counted for congressional representation, how race and ethnicity information is collected, and how legal-status information and government records may be used in the Census process.

Census data helps shape decisions about representation, resources, and services that communities across North Carolina rely on for years.

Now there is more time to learn what is being proposed, consider how the changes could affect your community, and submit a public comment.

NC Newsline's recent article highlights that the U.S. Census is about more than a headcount.

It helps shape federal funding, congressional representation, and the data nonprofits rely on to understand and serve their communities.

A proposed rule would change how some residents are counted and remove questions about race and ethnicity from the decennial census.

*That could have real consequences for North Carolina – and for nonprofits working in communities across our state.*

We recently partnered with NC Counts Coalition for a webinar on what’s happening with the census and what nonprofits should know. They’re a great resource for staying informed, including their helpful summary of the proposed rule.

A public comment period for the proposed rule is open through October 13. We encourage nonprofits to comment on how these changes would affect your work and communities.

NC nonprofits are organizing opposition to U.S. Census changes proposed by the Trump administration, which they say would result in inaccuracies.

Nonprofits know their communities – and they know that the issues people care about don't stop at the top of the ballot.

Nonprofits can educate their communities about ballot measures as long as they stay nonpartisan. Share neutral information about what a measure would do, point people toward reliable resources, and encourage them to learn more.

We’re excited to share that Rich Harwood, President and Founder of The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation, will be the keynote speaker at our 2026 Conference for NC Nonprofits.

Rich’s keynote, The New Civic Path, will look at some of the systemic challenges facing our communities — and what it takes to address them.
