BLS focuses its energy on supporting the national programs of the sorority. Chartered over 70 years ago, the Beta Lambda Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. On December 10, 1949, Soror Mary Gladden Carter and Soror Alma West assisted in the charter of Beta Lambda Sigma Chapter. Charter members are: Hattie Bell, Ceasarea Debnam, Mamie Shepherd Haywood, George H. Manley, Daisy Morris, Ho

pinel Perry and Edith Trice. Like the seven founders of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. the charter members were educators. Beta Lambda Sigma Chatper also has a legacy of leadership within the regional and national body of the sorority. Chapter members have held notable positions such as NE Regional Area III Coordinator, NE Regional Philo Coordinator, NE Regional Grammateus, and NE Regional Nominating Chair, Northeast Region National Education Fund Chair, and National Executive Director. Professionally the chapter consists of retired and active members in the fields of education, pharmaceuticials, business, medicine, and city government. Several members have served on community executive boards and in other non-profit organizations like the NAACP, National Council of Negro Women and The Junior League of Raleigh. The rich diversity of leadership and experience both within and outside Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc is a source of chapter pride.

We are proud to shine the BLS Spotlight on Soror Denise Rogers, our Programs and Activities Chair, as we celebrate her recent recognition in the Garner community.

On August 18, Soror Denise attended the Garner Chamber of Commerce IMPACT Conference, where she was honored to receive the 2026 IMPACT Award!

This well-deserved recognition reflects her continued commitment to showing up, serving others, supporting the community, and building meaningful connections. Her leadership and dedication exemplify what it means to make a lasting impact.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

This September, the Beta Lambda Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is walking for a cause that impacts far too many families.

Join our team for the St. Jude Walk/Run, supporting the lifesaving mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and helping ensure children battling cancer have access to the care and treatment they need.

The Beta Lambda Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. invites you to join us for the 2026 Triangle Walk Like MADD as we walk in remembrance, honor survivors, and stand together against impaired driving.

This walk is especially meaningful as we continue to support our own Soror Lakeatia Daniels-Owens, whose life was forever changed by a drunk driving tragedy.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated mourns the loss of Soror Jedda "Ms. Dupree" Jones.

With razor-sharp wit, impeccable comedic timing, and the ability to make audiences laugh while delivering hard-earned wisdom, actress and comedian Soror Jones created one of the most beloved recurring characters in syndicated radio history.

She leaves behind a remarkable entertainment legacy that stretched across radio, film, television, and stand-up comedy. While she appeared in several acclaimed Hollywood productions, it was her unforgettable work as Ms. Dupree that cemented her place in Black radio culture and made her a household name among millions of listeners.
