🎄 Gena at The Mihret House in Ethiopia 🤍
Last week, our boys celebrated Gena—Ethiopian Christmas—surrounded by food, laughter, and the kind of togetherness that turns a house into a family.
In Ethiopia, Gena is celebrated on January 7. It is traditionally a day centered on community, simplicity, and sharing. Many people fast before Christmas, so the meal itself becomes deeply meaningful—a celebration of both faith and togetherness. Our home honored that tradition in the best way possible.
The boys were part of so many special traditions:
🐔 choosing the chicken
🔪 helping prepare and cut the meat
🍲 cooking doro wat (our beloved spicy chicken stew)
🥩 making tibs
☕️ a traditional coffee ceremony
🥖 enjoying himbasha, a lightly sweet holiday bread
By the time the food was ready, the whole house smelled warm and spicy and alive.
After eating, they played games, laughed, and did what kids do best—collapsed into happy naps, full of food and joy.
Moments like these are why this work matters. It isn’t just about meals or school or medical care—it’s about creating a place where children who once survived on the streets now get to experience rituals, holidays, and belonging.
Thank you for being part of this story. You make these moments possible. ❤️
