New York Overwhelmingly Supports Public Gathering Mask Ban
New York State has just concluded a public opinion poll that shows overwhelming support for a law banning the wearing of masks in public gatherings. This increase in support comes amidst a spate of hate incidents, including anti-Semitic attacks in New York and elsewhere in the United States, amidst widespread discussions about how to balance public safety with identity transparency. The bill targets a change in identity transparency to reduce incidents and crimes motivated by racial or religious hate. This move comes amidst the rise of anti-Semitic incidents in the state and across the United States.
About 75% of New York residents support the new proposed law according to a poll conducted by Mercury Public Affairs. One of the key points for support for this law has to do with a public outcry for such action amid increased incidences of hate crimes. Sixty percent reported increased harassment, when compared with the past, based on race, ethnicity, or religion.
While on the other side, 68% of participants believe that free speech should be balanced with public safety. The survey further explained that minorities, including Jews 76%, Asians 68%, and Black people 67%, are particularly concerned about being victims of such incidents.
The coalition urged New York lawmakers to pass legislation similar to historical statutes against groups such as the Ku Klux Klan in hopes of raising responsibility for individuals participating in public gatherings 'with the intent to intimidate or abuse'. The new law would make exemptions for mask-wearing based on medical and religious purposes.
The bill, however, does not come without its critics. The NYCLU is one of the leading opponents of the proposed law, which they feel would put health and safety in jeopardy and could be used as a license for discriminatory enforcement. The union has also warned that banning masks could have negative effects on public health, especially during pandemics.
The fear of hate crimes and the concern for public safety have led to the majority of New York residents supporting the ban on mask-wearing during public gatherings. But opponents have warned of consequences to come. A final decision about the fate of this law could have widespread ripples into safety and civil rights issues in New York and other states.
