We are heartbroken by the devastating barn fire that claimed the lives of so many beloved horses. Our deepest condolences go out to the owners, caretakers, families, and everyone impacted by this unimaginable loss.

Horses are more than athletes β€” they are partners, teachers, and family. The grief felt throughout the North Carolina equine community is profound, and we stand in support of all those affected during this incredibly difficult time.

This tragedy is also a solemn reminder of the critical importance of fire prevention and emergency preparedness in every equine facility β€” including routine electrical inspections, proper detection systems, evacuation planning, and staff training. Honoring these horses means doing everything we can to protect those in our care.

Please keep this barn and all affected in your thoughts. Our community stands together

With deepest sympathy and unwavering support,
The North Carolina Horse Council

🚨 NCDA&CS PRESS RELEASE: Horse in Davidson County tests positive for EHV1/EHM 🚨

The NC Dept. of Agriculture has confirmed a positive case of EHV-1/EHM (neurologic equine herpesvirus) in Davidson County involving a horse recently imported from Florida. The affected horse was humanely euthanized, and the remaining horses on the property are quarantined and being closely monitored. At this time, there is no known risk of spread beyond this location.

This case is not linked to the current national outbreak, but it’s an important reminder to stay vigilant. Please practice good biosecurity, isolate new arrivals, and contact your veterinarian if you notice symptoms such as fever, nasal discharge, or neurologic signs.
