The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST.

The Rotary Club of the Capital City meets weekly for breakfast on Tuesday mornings at 7:30 am at Carolina Country Club located at 2500 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service

President Joshua Davis shared the final numbers from our 37th Annual Capital City Golf Classic at Tuesday's meeting. Every dollar helps a Wake County student who has overcome real adversity go to college.

The Abilities Tennis Association of North Carolina runs more than 300 free clinics, tournaments, and events at more than 30 sites across the state. With its OnSite program, it also brings tennis directly to day programs, schools, and residential facilities, so transportation is not a barrier.

Thank you, Trevor Chambers. 💙

At our September 15 meeting, Trevor shared his New York City: the neighborhoods and restaurants he loves. He also shared a personal memory of September 11, 2001, when he watched the towers fall together with other New Yorkers. His talk came four days after the 25th anniversary of that day.

Stories like this make us closer as a club, and that makes our service stronger.

Before the galleries and the awards, Bob Rankin was an art teacher. 🍎

He taught in Wake County public schools for 30 years, at Ligon Middle School and at Sanderson, Garner, and Millbrook high schools. Later he started Art in the Village, which became Artsplosure, and helped start the Raleigh Public Art and Design Board.

That is Service Above Self in action: using your gifts to make life better for the people around you.

That is how Bob Styres' son describes what his father would say to a Styres Scholar.

Most of us know Bob only as the name on our scholarship. We asked his son for more, and he sent stories: a nickname that stuck, Army flight years, and a school board seat held through a hard stretch.

Game, set, belonging. 🎾

On September 22, Lou Welch of the Abilities Tennis Association of North Carolina joined our breakfast with Steve and his son Carlson, one of the association's top athletes.

ATANC gives people with intellectual and developmental disabilities a place on the court all year. Its programs are free for athletes and reach more than 3,000 people each year across North Carolina.

On September 15, two of our members took us around the world. Jason Obermeier shared his 10th anniversary trip to Japan, with real tips on flights, bullet trains, and the JR Pass. Trevor Chambers took us through his New York City: the places he loves and a day he will never forget.

A painter joined us for breakfast! 🎨

On September 8, Raleigh artist Bob Rankin brought four of his paintings to our Tuesday meeting: a seascape, a city skyline, a round underwater reef, and a large abstract in teal, green, and yellow.

Bob has traveled to more than 40 countries, and those places go into his work. Before that, he taught art in Wake County public schools for 30 years.

The 37th Annual Capital City Golf Classic is Monday, September 28 at North Ridge Country Club — registration at 8:45 AM, sh***un start at 10:30.

The field caps at 36 teams and spots go first-come, first-served, so if you've been meaning to get a foursome together, this is the week to do it.

Sponsorships start at $1,500 and every level includes a team of four. Raffle items and team prizes are just as welcome.
