Momentum for composting is growing in North Carolina 🌱

This week members of NCCC gathered at the NC General Assembly for a successful Lobby Day focused on educating legislators, advocating for policies that support composting infrastructure & markets, and promoting the inclusion of compost within North Carolina’s definition of agriculture in the pending 2026 NC Farm Act! We were invited back soon to present to the House Ag Committee!

A special thank you to our lobbyist, Nick Wood of Blue Heron Consulting, for coordinating a full day of productive meetings, and to our Advocacy Committee volunteers Trey Alber (of Wilmington Compost Company) and Amy Fulford (of Brooks Contractor & Compost )for helping amplify the voice of North Carolina’s composting industry at the Capitol! 🤎🏛️

Last weekend we wrapped up International Compost Awareness Week with a Meet Your Local Composter Farm Tour and Chapter meeting at Wilmington Compost Company’s facility in Pender County! We loved getting a behind-the-scenes look at WCC’s composting process, and learned a lot about compostable plastics and #7 plastics.

Big thanks to Trey, NCCC Board Member and Co-owner of Wilmington Compost Company, for participating all year with NCCC’s ICAW planning committee to organize such a meaningful and memorable event! We’re grateful for the hard work and collaboration of our Coastal Composting Chapter 💚♻️🌱🌎 Thank you to everyone who joined us.

Last week’s Sustainable Spirits at The Plant in Pittsboro was everything this community is about 🌱 Composters, gardeners, sustainability pros, and advocates gathered to connect, share, and celebrate International Compost Awareness Week — plus a full circle plant swap with native trees, flowers, and houseplants!

It was a beautiful evening of networking, conversation, and community-building. 🍺♻️ A heartfelt thank you to our 2026 Silver Sponsor, McGill Environmental Systems, whose generous support makes evenings like this possible, and to Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling for co-hosting the event with us!

We’re happy to see so many municipalities and counties in NC recognize International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW)! Thank you to everyone who’s led events and participated in NC.

What is organic matter and why does it matter? 🤔🌿

It’s International Compost Awareness Week and today we’re celebrating the millions of microbes in our soils and how they are tiny yet mighty.

Healthy soils that are rich in organic matter:
🌍 Provide vital nutrients to plants.
🌍 Help sequester carbon from the air.
🌍 Host microbes that are the essence of the food web.

You can do your part to ensure that there is a thriving ecosystem for future generations by participating in one of our many Cary Composts programs! 💚

Purchase a backyard bin, participate in our yard waste collection service, look for the event compost bins at our festivals and special events, or take your food waste to a drop-off location.👍

However you choose to get involved, you can feel proud that you’re helping to grow healthy soils by transforming waste into a resource. And remember, by creating compost, you are helping to feed the soil that feeds us!

We all want to feed the soil that feeds us - but we don't always know how. Wouldn't it be great to have a recipe for improving your soil?

Enter GUAC: Guidelines for Use and Application of Compost which, like a recipe, provide the ingredients and instructions to create a soil suited for your needs. Want the recipe?
