Dr. Kara and Laura are in Raleigh today, giving eye exams for SouthLight Healthcare. This is the first time SouthLight is offering optometry services, among the other health services they offer on a daily basis.

Nourish Hope: Feeding & Healing Children in Jalpatagua

We see their eyes first, but their hunger is impossible to miss.

Every year, VOSH NC volunteers travel to Jalpatagua, Guatemala to provide free eye care. But what we witness goes far beyond vision:
children too weak to grow, too sick to play, too hungry to thrive.

The pediatric clinic at Hospital Regional San Juan Bautista works tirelessly to care for these children - but their supplies often run out long before the month is over.

Over the next 90 days, we’re raising $10,000 to feed and heal the most vulnerable children in Jalpatagua — providing:

-Food for malnourished children
-Doctor visits & medicine
-Hospital care for the critically ill

Last Thursday, Dr. Kara and Laura joined Downtown Raleigh Alliance to give eye exams and eyeglasses to Raleigh residents in need of optometric services.

VOSH NC will be participating in Downtown Raleigh Alliance's Project OUTREACH on Thursday, May 1st. Free eye exams and prescription eyeglasses will be provided.

Twice per year, the Downtown Raleigh Ambassador Program invites those experiencing or at risk of homelessness and those who need medical or mental health assistance to the Project REACH OUT Day of Care— a one-day, one-stop event in Downtown Raleigh that connects social service and community organizations with the community members who need their support.

Services Provided at Project REACH OUT - Free & open to the public

-Connection point to housing providers
-Free wellness checks and health screenings
-Benefits enrollment and employment assistance
-Free haircuts, showers, clothing, hygiene products (Showers will be available 9am-4pm)

Trip #3 to Jalpatagua, Guatemala was a success!

VOSH-NC followed up with post-cataract surgery patients & got them fitted for new glasses, and even saw a few emergencies as well. (Phew! Good thing Dr. Kara was there at the time of the emergencies!)

Stay tuned for when VOSH-NC takes 13 optometrists & volunteers (12 of the 13 are women-go girls!) to do a week of clinic work in July.

While this trip is full (we have enough ODs, opticians, & volunteers) we are always accepting donations to go toward supplies and equipment to use while overseas.

Happy New Year!

VOSH NC will be headed back to Guatemala next week! This will be our 3rd volunteer opportunity to help those with limited to no access to eyecare in the region of Jalpatagua.

While Jalpatagua holds a special place in our hearts, and we plan on continuing to service those in need in Guatemala, VOSH NC would love to continue to expand their volunteer services to those in need closer to home-if you or someone you know needs an eye exam or prescription glasses, please email Laura Americo at [email protected] for further information on how to access these services.
