Today NCMS honors Juneteenth, commemorating June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

We recognize this day as a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring contributions of Black Americans to our communities and our nation. Learn more: https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/moments/juneteenth

The time to invest in the future of our state's healthcare infrastructure is now.

Hear from Representative Dr. Tim Reeder about how his bill, the RURAL Care Act, can ensure rural areas of our state have quality healthcare facilities that will last.

06/17/2026

Did you know that NC has the 2nd largest rural population in the country?

That's why Representative Dr. Tim Reeder is sponsoring House Bill 1090, the RURAL Care Act, so every North Carolinian has the access to the care they need regardless of zip code.

Access to care shouldn't depend on your ZIP code.

NC Representative Dr. Tim Reeder explains House Bill 1090 — the Revitalizing, Uplifting Regions & Access Local (RURAL) Care Act — and how it seeks to expand access to medical services in rural areas of North Carolina.

Hear directly from Representative Tim Reeder, MD, the bill’s sponsor, about its goals and potential impact on patients, physicians, and communities across the state.

Congratulations to Methodist University and Cape Fear Valley Health on this milestone occasion.

Even amid a full agenda at the 2026 AMA Annual Meeting in Chicago, the NCMS delegation found time to connect with colleagues and serve ice cream.

While representing North Carolina physicians, our delegates are engaging in critical discussions on Medicare physician payment reform, prior authorization, artificial intelligence in health care, workforce challenges, physician well-being, and other issues shaping the future of medicine. We're proud of their leadership, collaboration, and advocacy on behalf of patients and physicians across our state.

A little ice cream and camaraderie can go a long way between meetings!

The 2026 AMA Annual Meeting is underway in Chicago, where the NCMS delegation joins colleagues from across the country to help shape policy and discuss issues that directly impact patient care.

The NCMS Delegation is comprised of Rebecca Hayes, MD, Chair; Arthur Apolinario, MD; Mary Ann Contogiannis, MD; Justin Hurie, MD; Karen Smith, MD; and Royce Syracuse, MD. Alternate delegates include Carl Westcott, MD; Eileen Raynor, MD; and Ronnie Laney, MD. The delegation is actively collaborating with Hans Arora, MD; Kavita Shah Arora, MD; Al Osbahr, MD; Asha McClurg, MD; Aatif Husain, MD; Sam Fleischman, MD; and other North Carolina members of the AMA House of Delegates to ensure a coordinated and effective approach to key issues.

We’re especially proud to see Delegate Mary Ann Contogiannis, MD, author a resolution addressing the role of peptides in therapy and the need for the AMA to proactively engage on this rapidly evolving issue. Delegate Arthur Apolinario, MD, also provided testimony to protect the confidentiality of mental health records, helping encourage individuals to seek needed care and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health treatment for health care professionals and others.

Thank you to our NCMS Delegation and other North Carolina members of the AMA House of Delegates for representing our state and ensuring physicians have a strong voice in the policies that shape healthcare.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor those who gave their lives in service to our country.

Many clinicians have served – or continue to serve – in the armed forces, showing their commitment to care both in uniform and in their communities.

Their sacrifice inspires our commitment to the health and well-being of North Carolina.

At this year’s NCMS Spring Medical Leadership Summit, physicians and PAs from across North Carolina gathered around a common concern: the pressures facing medicine are growing more complex, and no specialty or practice setting can solve them alone.

The summit brought together leaders from specialty and county societies, health plans, and healthcare organizations to discuss how medical societies can evolve beyond traditional membership organizations to provide more practical, solution-focused support for physicians and PAs.

One major theme throughout the summit was the importance of greater unity across the profession. As NCMS President Dr. Carl Westcott shared:

“While specialization has advanced the profession of medicine, it has also weakened the collective voice of physicians, especially as hospital systems and insurers consolidate and become more powerful.”

From healthcare affordability and Medicaid to AI, workforce development, and reducing administrative burden, leaders across healthcare shared ideas, solutions, and strategies for strengthening the future of medicine in North Carolina.

Thank you to all of our speakers, partners, and attendees who helped make this year’s summit such an important conversation.
