We will miss Paula forever.

Former SEANC President Paula Schubert passed away on Aug. 14. She was an integral part in the organization's success for four decades. She served as President from 1999-2000 and helped lead the organization in a more aggressive direction, introducing a new mission, logo and motto – Keeping Watch, Taking Action.

Paula was also one of the founders of EMPAC, SEANC’s political action committee, in 1989 and was EMPAC Chair from 2005-2008. Under her leadership, EMPAC became a force to be reckoned with. Unlike most PACs, EMPAC was non-partisan. She was one of the most beloved and revered leaders of SEANC and received many awards including Member-of-the-Year, Distinguished Service and the President’s Award.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, September 17 at Clements Funeral and Cremation Services in Durham, NC.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the SEANC Scholarship Foundation, 1621 Midtown Place, Raleigh, NC 27609 or Second Chance Pet Adoptions, 6003 Chapel Hill Rd #133, Raleigh, NC 27607. Both are 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations.

North Carolina Senate Democratic leaders gathered Thursday to address how the legislature's failure to pass a budget has affected state employees.

Lawmakers announced the raises. They didn’t announce the job cuts.
Both the House and Senate proposed cutting vacant positions across state government. If those cuts are how the raises get paid for, that’s not a savings — it’s making permanent the staffing shortages that have crushed state employees for years.
Our members are already doing the work of those empty positions. Eliminating them doesn’t lighten the load. It makes it permanent.
And retirees just got their 9th year without a real COLA.
