Addis Jemari We empower orphans, vulnerable children, and their families to end generational poverty in Ethiopia.

Our primary focus is on education, economic empowerment, discipleship, and social support. Addis Jemari means β€œNew Beginnings” in Amharic β€” the official language of Ethiopia. We now work every day to empower the most vulnerable people in the communities we serve to have a fresh start at a new life of hope and self-reliance. Every aspect of our work finds its roots in our belief that every family in Ethiopia has the right to thrive spiritually, socially, educationally, and economically. At AJ Home, we strive to create a true family for once orphaned and vulnerable teenage girls. Through our Family Empowerment Program, we work to keep families together through sustainable solutions, including life skills training and income generation opportunities. Currently, we are serving more than 200 children, mothers, and fathers through our holistic approach.

This year's theme is "Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow." 🌱

In Addis Ababa, our version starts at the tutoring table. Up to 80 students come to our center three afternoons a week, and their lessons come with a nutritious meal. On Saturdays, Backpack Buddies families take food staples home.

Nourishment comes first, and it supports everything else we do, from tutoring to discipleship to helping parents earn a living.

Swipe to see how it fits together, and share this with someone who cares where the food goes!

Raleigh, our BBQ plates will sell out. Here's why you'll want one πŸ–

It's our 4th year hosting BBQ & Baskets, which is Teen Board's signature event. High school students from across Wake County plan and run the whole day. They build the raffle baskets with donations from local businesses, cook the sides, bake the treats, and work every shift. Everything raised goes to school shoes, supplies, bookbags, and year-round tutoring for more than 100 students in Ethiopia. Last year's event paid for every school need in both of our programs this past year!

Here's what's waiting for you:
πŸ– Chopped pork or pulled chicken barbecue (new this year!), with baked beans, mac and cheese, hush puppies, and slaw.
🎨 Face painting for all ages
🎯 Lawn games and music
🧁 A homemade bake sale
πŸŽ„ Our first-ever custom Christmas ornaments, made by the girls of AJ Home!
🧺 Raffle baskets ($5 per ticket at the event)
πŸ›οΈ Handmade, fair-trade goods from Ethiopia at the AJ Marketplace
🎁 The kickoff of our Christmas in Ethiopia campaign

πŸ“… Sunday, November 8
⏰ 11:30 AM to 4:00 PM
πŸ“ The Greenway Club at Falls River, 1300 Falls River Ave, Raleigh

Plates go fast, and hush puppies go faster!

We asked girls in both of our programs one question: what do you want to be when you grow up? πŸ’›

At AJ Home and in our Family Empowerment Program, we walk with these girls toward their answers through tutoring, counseling, and goals they set for themselves.

Happy ! Join us in praying for each of these girls as they work toward their dreams, and drop a πŸ’› to cheer them on.

"Cast all your anxiety on him because He cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7

Today is , and this verse is a good reminder that none of us has to carry everything alone.

Our students in Addis Ababa don't have to carry it alone either. Every week, our counselors, social workers, and program staff sit down together to talk through how each student is doing at school, at home, and in their hearts. Those conversations show us who needs extra care, and lately more students need one-on-one time with a counselor.

A lot of that care starts with a simple question: "How are you doing, really?"

So wherever you are today, ask someone you love. Then take a minute to ask yourself too. πŸ’›

What's scarier: Panic Point, or forgetting to use code ADDISJEMARI at checkout? πŸŽƒ

Our Teen Board says forgetting the code, and they do have a point. That one code gets you a discount on Panic Point tickets, AND part of every ticket goes to our Christmas in Ethiopia campaign.

If you're looking for Halloween plans, this is it. Panic Point is a big outdoor haunted attraction in Youngsville with haunted trails and plenty of scares.

Last year, our code raised almost $1,000, and this year we're coming for that record. Round up your bravest friends, plus the one who'll scream the whole time, and pick a night. πŸ‘»

One of our AJ Home girls just graduated from high school! πŸŽ“ She marked the day with Cindy, our Executive Director, Semere, our Country Director, and Asrat, our Education Coordinator, who have all been part of her journey.

She also received a laptop and a cell phone to help her get ready for her next step: semi-independent living on her own. We're so proud of her, and we can't wait to see where she goes next.

Drop a πŸ₯³ in the comments to congratulate her!
