Congratulations to the Town of Enfield and the Town of Conetoe for being awarded the 2026 Legacy Tree Fund Grants!

The Town of Conetoe will use their grant to plant trees on its Town Hall Walking Trail and in its Community Park. This project will improve both public parks operated by the Town and was derived from years of planning and community engagement to improve recreation opportunities and neighborhood conditions in Conetoe.

The Town of Enfield will use its grant to improve its Park & Recreation Facility – its largest and most centrally located park, nestled within a revitalizing residential neighborhood. The facility includes a large playground, walking trail, ball field, basketball courts, and a community building.

We welcome all certified tree care/industry professionals in NC to join us for an Industry
Listening Session on October 8 from 5-6 p.m. in Hickory, NC, after Day 1 of The Great NC Tree
Conference.
The goal of this joint event by the North Carolina Urban Forest Council (NCUFC) and ISA
Southern Chapter is to listen to the ideas and feedback of industry professionals and learn how
to best honor and serve our members and organizations.
This is also an opportunity to network with colleagues, meet the NCUFC Board of Directors and
ISA Southern Chapter Executive Committee, and learn more about these organizations.

July's NCUFC Tree of the Month is the Longleaf Pine!
Longleaf Pine- Pinus pilustris
Height: 60-120 Feet at maturity
The Longleaf Pine is a classic evergreen conifer in the southern United States. It grows a deep taproot, prefers sandy and acidic soils, and has the largest cone of any pine species in North America. The leaves can grow to be anywhere from 6 to 12 inches in length! The Longleaf Pine is home to the endangered red cockaded woodpecker and has historically been used as strong lumber and a source for tar and pitch.

Meet 2026 NCUFC Board Treasurer, Greg Zickgraf!!
Greg Zickgraf is Senior Vegetation Program Manager with Duke Energy in Western NC Mountain Zone. Supervising tree trimming, hazard tree removals, herbicide application, and aerial saw work.
"I have really enjoyed my time on the board with NCUFC working to develop new educational opportunities for our members." - Greg
Favorite Tree: "S**g Bark Hickory. They're one of the first trees I learned to identify as a kid. My grandpa took me around his farm for a school project and he taught me a bunch of the trees and how to identify them all. They probably are my favorite because of that memory along with the ecological value."
