“The most rewarding part about serving in the Nature Preschool has been reading books and singing songs to the kids that had a big impact on me as a child.” says Ariam

Ariam is the WisCorps service member assisting us this year! She has been helping the Educators in the nature preschool as well as across our organization by leading field trips, assisting with programming, and overseeing aftercare. She’s spent a lot of time with the kids, reading to them, doing crafts, and engaging with them in nature.

“I think children being comfortable in nature is so crucial to how they view the outdoors for the rest of their lives. Especially living in a city, a lot of people grow up thinking that nature is a nuisance or something to observe. This can build up fear or reluctance to fully engage with nature. Playing is one of the most important things to children, besides their families, and having play time outdoors builds a positive association early on. Playing in the outdoors also challenges kids to move their bodies and problem solve in ways they can’t do in a normal classroom.”

For your service in helping us connect children and nature, we thank you Ariam, and hope you continue to have an amazing year at ALNC!

Celebrate America Recycles Day today, November 15! Since 1994, this day has been all about recognizing the impact of recycling on our communities, environment and economy.

By reusing materials, we cut down on greenhouse gases, save energy and keep waste out of landfills. Recycling supports a circular economy, helping create local jobs and reduce production costs. Join the movement and keep recycling going strong!

Randy Senzig wrote this April 23–

Yesterday was Earth Day! Today as the sun sets in the west
we celebrate the birthday of Ross Andrews, our friend who passed away nine years ago. For you that knew him it has been a great loss. I met Ross during a two year study with Carolyn Toben at Timberlake Farms. We became very close as we were of a similar spirit about the earth, children and the interconnection with all life. Ross, Iris and I worked day after day to lay the groundwork for a nonprofit and develop a working education plan. The result was the Center for Human Earth Restoration. The name says it all. We set out to connect the underserved middle schoolers with the natural world. A deep disconnect even today. Ross was a humble man who lived with his heart open to others. I felt that he was my brother. He came in one day and said, I am going to call you Brother Coyote. I replied what should I call you and instantly he said, Brother Fox. It would mean something later but for now it was a scout thing between the two of us. He was so special. He spent the better part of a year trying to find the perfect summer camp that he and her daughter could attend. He was something: sliding his canoe into Yates mill pond late at night float under the moon, pushing his canoe loaded with trees through Walnut Creek wetlands, having a tea party under a backyard tree with Naomi, dancing with friends at drumming, or intently listening to you thinking in silence for a moment and then answering “ah——-yes I see. Then, he was gone. Memorial services followed. More and different peoples came from diverse connects. I tried to describe it. Ross was the center of a flower connecting all the petals contains diverse people and interests. He brought them together. Everyone spoke of him as a brother. I thought that I only felt that way even a teacher that we met together for an hour said that he felt Ross as a brother. Ross was loved. Later as I laid mourning Brother Coyote came to mind as the one who walks between the human and natural teaching important lessons sometimes by tricks. What about Brother Fox? As a spirit animal it is said to be a messenger from God. Ross lived in harmony with people and the natural world. That is a lesson for all of us. Ross is in our memories for ever. Brother Coyote

Bringing the Earth into the Hearts of All

C.H.E.R. was created in 2010 around the kitchen table, when Ross Andrews and Randy Senzig realized a pressing human need for ways to reconnect with nature and renew inner spirits. With the help of Randy’s wife, Iris Senzig, and many interns, volunteers, and dedicated staff members, C.H.E.R. has grown in the Triangle area to meet the growing need for human-earth reconnection.

We are proud to provide hands-on nature programming to: public schools, homeschoolers, adults, and a very special group of Southeast Raleigh students.
