Breadfruit trees , 35 of them, are headed to a village near the ocean where they desparately need more trees. The people planting them know how to keep them alive and have the manpower to do so. These are the only trees we ask that people pay for since they take so long to grow to this size and many die.

The local market is where we buy cashews for planting. People are always asking for cashew seedlings, so we have around two thousand growing at our nursery.

It’s mango season and people know we will buy their seeds. Yesterday we had over twenty families come with seeds from freshly eaten mangoes. These seeds are then planted to grow mango seedlings for the community.

Today a priest got a couple truck loads of trees. He’s planting them around the church land and employing parishioners to care for them. The community is sharing the responsibility of reforestation.

The Haiti Tree Project's nursery is a reliable source of many different species of fruit and hardwood seedlings for local landowners. When it rains and the conditions are ripe for planting, many come to the nursery to pick out trees to plant.

As you all know, alongside Trees That Feed, we have put a lot of effort into invigorating the local economy for breadfruit in southern Haiti.

Here are endangered Mapou seedlings being brought to a planting site along the community's water source. Residents are paid to plant and care for the trees until they are established and resilient enough to survive on their own.In the long-run the trees will safeguard the quality and quantity of the water there.

Check out this initiative! The Haiti Tree Project is working to reforest the local area and protect endangered species like the Mapou tree. Recently, we planted a Mapou seedling as part of a project to 'hydrate' the local spring that is used as the main water source for the nearby community. This will help ensure that residents have access to clean and reliable water, even during dry spells. We're thrilled to support this effort towards sustainability and the preservation of our natural resources. 🌳🌴

In this link, you will see the infamous Haitian Mapou Tree. It's endangered and we are bringing it back. One of the largest native Haitian Trees, fast-growing and beautiful. We are using it to hold the riverbank for generations to come.

🌱 Here is Enel at The Haiti Tree Project's nursery, where we supply fruit and hardwood trees for the region. 🌳 The process of growing a tree at the nursery starts with foraging specific tree seeds, followed by potting and watering them. With the guidance of agroforestry experts, local knowledge, and immense effort, these seedlings become the building blocks of a more sustainable ecosystem that supports the needs of our communities.

In the background, you can catch a glimpse of our fruit dryer. 🍎 This is where we preserve fruits for personal consumption or to be brought to the market, encouraging less food waste.

Fallen fruit!? Leading up to breadfruit season, breadfruit trees will drop (abort) some immature fruit while many others stay on the tree and mature. A natural and seasonal process, this is basically the tree's way of regulating energy output. Here is a photo of fallen fruit from a beautiful Tahitian variety called ‘Afara’. At maturity Afara are about twice this size, sometimes bigger.

Today’s breadfruit life lesson 🌞: sometimes you have to let go of something unfinished to reach your best potential!

Afara (Artocarpus altilis)
