HOBY North Carolina East HOBY's mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation.

HOBY has a long history of successfully motivating young people to develop into outstanding leaders. HOBY programs provide youth selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences. HOBY also provides adults with opportunities to make a significant impact on the lives of youth by volunteering. Over 4,000 committed HOBY volunt

eers plan and execute the programs each year, serving both at the local HOBY affiliate level and on HOBY’s Board of Trustees. Due to the selfless efforts of volunteers and the contributions of generous donors, over 10,000 students participate in HOBY programs annually across the country.

Dr. Rick Grandinetti is a successful, nationally known consultant and keynote speaker. He is a leading authority in altering company cultures to Excellence.

He is an expert in behavior change and capitalizing on the “human capital” within a company. He has designed, produced and conducted thou-sands of seminars and keynote addresses throughout North America. Dr. Grandinetti has consulted and educated over 1900 companies worldwide. He addresses audiences totaling over 50,000 people per year.

In 2013, he earned his Ph.D in Business Management from Ashley University. Dr. Grandinetti travels over 250 days a year to different locations in North America. He has published a book titled “Succeed Inside the Box Guaranteed.”

Dr. Grandinetti serves as an adjunct professor for University of North Carolina Business Graduate School and Shepherd Town College and has worked in the industries of banking, airlines travel and manufacturing and many government divisions and military branches.

Dr. Grandinetti has been a mainstay speaker with HOBY North Carolina East for several years now - and he looks forward to meeting our ambassadors each year!

Here is a sneak peek at our Panelists for the Group Leadership Panel!

Alison Houchin is the Director of Guest Operations at the Museum of Life and Science, where she leads an amazing and daring team of individuals who create and execute amazing experiences for members and guests ranging from daily operations to major events.

Shailen Fofaria is a rising high school junior attending Enloe High School, working to excel as a leader, athlete, and advocate. He is involved in many things, such as being next year’s Junior Class President, working in the nonprofit sector by being the Student Board Chair for Youth Ambassadors of Service and being an intern for PORCH Raleigh, and co-founding a company, Sensible, where he works with his team on a patented-product!

Ethan serves as the College and Youth Programs Coordinator for Activate Good, a Triangle-area nonprofit organization that improves our community through people-powered projects for good. In this role, Ethan is responsible for organizing and managing projects that include Activate Kids as well as the Youth Volunteer Corps of the Greater Triangle.

Let’s get some sneak peeks at our curriculum for HOBY NC East this year!
Day 1 Keynote is Mindy Sopher!

Mindy Sopher has been a professional advisor and mentor to students in Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and at NC State University in Raleigh. Currently, she teaches Nonprofit Leadership and Development and advises undecided new students here.
Mindy notes that she has received some amazing honors but muses and still dreams of having an Elementary School Girls Basketball Team named the Sopher Gophers someday. Among other things, Mindy has:
✨Twice been named as Outstanding Faculty in the Communication Department.
✨Received the Association of Fraternity Advisors Distinguished Service Award and the Robert Shaffer Award (lifetime achievement) Award
✨Had a Graduate Scholarship created in her name by her own Kappa Delta Sorority and given to women entering the field of Higher Education
✨Been named National Greek Advisor of the Year by the Sigma Nu Fraternity
✨Had a “little crystal cup” named for her and given to the Outstanding NC State sorority every year at Homecoming
✨Celebrated November 20, now known as Mindy Sopher Day in Raleigh as proclaimed by Mayor Charles Meeker
✨Received “The Order of the Long Leaf Pine” from Governor Beverly Perdue

On a more personal note, in her free time, Mindy raises English Bulldogs, enjoys gardening and therapeutic coloring, and learning something new every day.
Most important, though, says Mindy, is that she is blessed to have survived cancer four times and is still going strong! She is hoping to finish her doctorate in Ag. Extension and Leadership Education concentrating on Youth Leadership at NC State before the university decides to give it to her posthumously!

Next spotlight! Our Director of Junior Staff- Austin!

I was an ambassador at HOBY NC EAST and HOBY WLC in 2018, and since then, I have been volunteering ever since. HOBY is a magical place where young adults blossom into the next leaders of tomorrow, and I am fortunate to be a part of it every year. I transitioned to the LSC team because of my experience and Joy for working with J-Staff. The goal is to keep the spirit and energy of the HOBY seminar alive for future generations, and J-Staff brings the energy!

I am excited to meet all the ambassadors and the future J-Staff they will become!

Hey HOBY! I am Hallie (like Halle Berry) and I am the Director of Facilitators (and social media) for NC East and I am very excited to be apart of this team and organization! I first volunteered with HOBY last summer and decided I wanted to do more! To see our ambassadors grow into more confident humans is life changing and I am honored to be here!
