As loyal volunteers and dedicated alumni, I write to you today to provide information regarding the current state of Alpha Epsilon Chapter at NC State University.
As you may recall the Alpha Epsilon Chapter was dutifully (re)installed in early spring 2019. I regret to inform you that due to actions of the chapter and/or its members, has resulted in the suspension of the chapter by North Carolina State University for a minimum of four (4) years. In the institution's findings the chapter or its members were charged with participation in a variety of hazing activities directed against spring 2019 new members over a period of approximately forty-five (45) days. According to an investigation conducted by the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life, Pi Kappa Alpha members engaged in behaviors that include, but are not limited to:
- New members participated in line-ups which included quizzes and physical requirements (calisthenics, wall squats, etc.),
- New members were required to deliver and/or purchase food to be delivered to initiated members,
- New members were given degrading names and assignments by initiated members,
- New members were required to ask for inappropriate pictures of women and supply to the chapter.
Given the chapter’s checkered conduct history of having gone through a membership review as a colony for individual members with judicial violations along the previously listed violations, the institution came to the outcome of suspension. The chapter appealed the University’s June 3rd decision (here) of a four (4) year suspension which includes an additional two (2) year probation of the group upon its return. On August 13th the institution upheld its original decision. Given the University's outcome and the actions of the members of Alpha Epsilon Chapter, the International Fraternity has suspended the Alpha Epsilon Chapter.
The International Fraternity understands that this is painful for alumni young and old. However, Pi Kappa Alpha is committed to a successful and strong return to NC State University. It is through the alumni that Alpha Epsilon will live on until the return of Pi Kappa Alpha to NC State.
Lastly, the International Fraternity wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to Alpha Epsilon volunteers, especially those that are long-tenured; who have put their time, emotions, and treasure into supporting this group.
Fraternally,
Chase Dannenbaum
Director of Alumni Engagement
