If memory serves me well, The CARE Project started its partnership with NC EHDI in 2011. The first effort was to travel from community to community to meet with parents of young children who were born deaf and hard of hearing.

That very first parent meeting was in the Outer Banks in January of that year. I got up early (we lived in Wilmington) and drove up to the Outer Banks on a cold Saturday morning. On that day, I met amazing and strong parents who were all pretty new on their journeys. It was on that day that I met the Fergusons and the Lawrensons and each parent shared their journey with the group that day.

I've followed their journeys throughout the years and watched as their children grew and flourished because of the amazing parents they had and each parent has been such an inspiration to me to keep doing what we do for families!

I woke up this morning to the news that one of those precious parents, Tricia Kirschner Lawrenson, has moved on to her heavenly home. Tricia had a long journey of her own with cystic fibrosis and had 3 lung transplants along the years. I stayed connected with her primarily through social media and followed all of her struggles and successes. She became such a huge inspiration to me over the years. I may have only met her once in my life but she was present through her inspiration and spirit constantly. I remember what her husband, Nate, said on that cold January day years ago about the news that his daughter was deaf and it has stuck with me as well: "I was told that our daughter may not live. So what if she is deaf!"

I cried as soon as I saw the news but am comforted in knowing that she is no longer suffering. I am blessed to have known her.

Please pray for this family and remember them today as they enter a new chapter.

Y'all.....we are still trying to raise enough money to take everyone on our waiting list to The CARE Project Carowinds Family Fun Day in August....time is running out!
