We feed our neighbors, teach self-sufficiency, and grow healthy foods by cultivating innovative approaches to end hunger. Our programs provide our neighbors with healthy food, teach nutrition on a budget, equip them with job training, and even show how to grow their own food. In this way, people are able to move themselves out of hunger.

Sometimes, a simple thank-you says it all. 💙

Connor’s note is a awesome reminder of why BackPack Buddies matters. Each week, we help fill backpacks with nutritious meals and snacks for students to take home over the weekend — helping make sure they have food when school meals aren’t available.

Every bag makes a difference. And every note like this reminds us why we keep filling them.

When we pick up food from one of our retail partners, it can be on someone’s table by lunch the very next day. This pickup was headed all the way to Tarboro, NC, where the food will be distributed through our partner agencies to neighbors in the community.

Because of generous retail partners, we’ve distributed 6,107,226 pounds of food so far this year, helping good food reach the people who need it most.

We’re here to help! Visit foodshuttle.org/findfood to find resources in your area, including pantries and Mobile Markets.

When a child is experiencing hunger, their family often is, too.

In our School Choice Pantries, we want families to find foods and essentials that actually work for them—not just what happens to be on the shelf.

That’s why Shirley, our Child Hunger Program Manager, works closely with school counselors and social workers to identify what students and families need the most, including the foods they enjoy. She works hard to bring those items into the pantry, giving families more choice in what they take home.

One mom shared what that experience meant to her:

“They made me feel so comfortable and not like a burden. I liked that I could pick out food for my family and not just have to take what was offered. I didn’t expect to get toilet paper and paper towels! That really made me cry more. Thank you again for all that you do and for the encouragement.”

It’s a reminder that sometimes, giving families a choice and taking the time to understand what they actually need can mean more than we realize.

It’s not just about the kids. It’s about their families, too.

When a child experiences hunger, it’s rarely just the child who needs help. Parents, siblings, grandparents, and other family members feel the impact of food insecurity, too.

That’s why access and choice matter. Through School Choice Pantries, students and their families can choose the nutritious foods that are right for their household. For parents, that choice can bring joy in knowing they’re able to provide foods their children will enjoy.

Hazel, an elementary school student, said it best:

“Thank you for your support and donations. You have helped impact so many families in need.”

Her words are a powerful reminder that when we come together to support students, we’re helping nourish entire families with food, choice, and a bit of joy.

When Friday comes, every child deserves to know they’ll have food to eat over the weekend.

For some students, the meals they receive at school may be the most reliable food they have all week. That’s why BackPack Buddies provides child-friendly, easy-to-prepare meals and snacks for students to take home for the weekend.

One elementary school student shared:

“I like getting BackPack Buddies bags because sometimes at home we don't have a lot of food and we can be hungry. That's why I'm glad we get BackPack Buddies bags.”

BackPack Buddies helps ensure students have nutritious food to eat throughout the weekend, so they don’t have to worry about where their next meal will come from. On Monday morning, students can return to school nourished, energized, and ready to learn.

Together, we can help make sure every child has the food they need to thrive—not just through the school week, but throughout the weekend, too.
