Today is Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day! It's an honor to be a part of the important & special work to end HIV/AIDS everywhere, but especially in the South. Though our communities here face disproportionate impacts of the HIV epidemic like criminalization and stigma, we've got fierceness and fearlessness that knows no obstacles.

When we understand our history, it helps us understand and advocate for change today!

North Carolina’s HIV criminalization laws date back to the late 1980s, when they were shaped by fear and misinformation. Though they were updated in 2018, they're still outdated and create barriers to prevention and care.

THE NUMBERS ARE IN! At HIV Speaks on Jones St, 80+ people showed up and had 26+ scheduled meetings (+ countless unscheduled walk-ins) with state policymakers on just June 3. And we won't stop here!

"Once the law labels someone as a threat, it becomes much harder for people to see their humanity."

Robert Suttle spoke to how legal and public health institutions shape whose humanity is respected and who is punished. When we talk about HIV decriminalization, we must remember that, often, stigma and misinformation are at the root of the policy we work to dismantle. At today, we're demanding lawmakers center humanity and compassion when it comes to law and public health.
