Some babies receive breast milk, formula, or a combination depending on their family's needs, medical circumstances, military commitments, or personal goals.

There is no one-size-fits-all feeding journey.

At Global Military Lactation Community, we support families with evidence-based education and compassionate guidance—wherever they are on their journey.

💚 Fed, supported, and informed families matter.

When babies are actively nursing, their tongue covers their lower teeth. A biting baby is usually distracted, finished eating, or experimenting—not trying to hurt you.
Learning your baby's feeding cues can help reduce biting episodes.

Breastfeeding can continue for as long as it works for both parent and child.

💚 Every family's journey is different.

We missed WIC Breastfeeding Week last week—but the resources WIC provides to families are worth talking about all year long. 💜

Military life can add another layer to an already challenging feeding journey. PCS moves, deployments, duty schedules, returning to work, and constantly rebuilding your support system can make finding consistent support difficult.

WIC may be one more resource in your village.

And one reminder we think military families need to hear: **don't assume you won't qualify just because you're military.** Check your eligibility and learn what resources are available where you're stationed.

Have you used WIC during your breast/chest feeding or pumping journey?

👇 Tell us about your experience—or share something you wish another military family knew.

Breast size is primarily determined by fatty tissue—not milk-producing tissue. Parents with all breast sizes can successfully produce enough milk for their baby.

The best indicators that your baby is getting enough milk include:
✔️ Steady weight gain
✔️ Plenty of wet and dirty diapers
✔️ Baby appears satisfied after most feeds

💚 Every body is different. Every feeding journey is unique.

Many service members successfully continue providing breast milk through pumping before, during, and after separations. Every situation is different, and planning ahead with your healthcare team and support network can make a significant difference.

Military life presents unique challenges—but there are resources available to help families navigate them.

💚 There isn't one "right" way to feed your baby.

💙 Did you know that August is filled with breastfeeding observances that celebrate and support diverse communities?

While many people know about World Breastfeeding Week, there are several other important observances throughout August that recognize the unique experiences, cultures, and needs of breastfeeding and lactating families.

This month, we'll be highlighting:

🌍 World Breastfeeding Week
🤱 WIC Breastfeeding Week
🎖️ Military Lactation Celebration
🌺 Latina/x Breastfeeding Week
🏵 Indigenous Milk Medicine Week
🖤 Black Breastfeeding Week
🌸 AANHPI Breastfeeding Week

Each observance brings an important perspective to the conversation while working toward a common goal:

✨ Ensuring every family has equitable access to education, support, and evidence-based care throughout their infant feeding journey.

At Global Military Lactation Community, we believe every military family deserves culturally responsive, inclusive support—no matter their background, branch of service, duty station, or feeding journey.

Throughout August, we'll share educational resources, spotlight each observance, amplify community voices, and celebrate the incredible organizations making a difference around the world.

Together, we can build stronger families, healthier communities, and a more supportive future for all.

🌍 World Breastfeeding Week | August 1–7

Every military family's feeding journey deserves support.

World Breastfeeding Week is a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of breastfeeding, improving support for families, and advocating for policies that help parents meet their feeding goals.

For military families, the journey can include unique challenges:
✈️ PCS moves
🚢 Deployments and separations
📝 Training and operational commitments
💼 Returning to duty
🏥 Accessing consistent lactation support across duty stations

That's why community matters.

💚 Why Breastfeeding Matters
Breastfeeding provides benefits for both infants and parents, including:

👶 For Babies
• Supports healthy growth and development
• Provides antibodies that help protect against illness
• Adapts to a baby's changing nutritional needs
• Promotes bonding and comfort

🤱 For Parents
• Supports postpartum recovery
• May reduce the risk of certain long-term health conditions
• Encourages bonding through skin-to-skin contact and feeding
• Can be a meaningful part of the parenting journey when it aligns with a family's goals

💚 Remember...There is no one-size-fits-all feeding journey.
-Some families breastfeed exclusively.
-Some pump.
-Some combination feed.
-Some use formula.
-Some face unexpected challenges.

Every family's circumstances are different, and every family deserves evidence-based information, compassionate support, and respect.

At the Global Military Lactation Community, we're committed to ensuring military families never have to navigate that journey alone.
Together, we advocate, educate, mentor, and support military families around the world.
