As we continue to recognize Black History Month, we honor Doris Wallace, a dedicated public servant and the first African American female to serve on the Smithfield Town Council, whose life of service reflects a deep commitment to community, equity, and civic engagement.
Council Member Wallace brings decades of experience in education, social work, and community leadership to her role representing Smithfield. Before joining the Town Council, she served on Smithfield’s Planning Board, helping guide thoughtful growth and development, and has long been active in organizations focused on civic involvement, advocacy, and service.
Professionally, Doris Wallace devoted much of her career to social work and education, including service as a social worker and later as a substitute teacher with Johnston County Public Schools. Her work has consistently centered on supporting families, strengthening communities, and ensuring others have access to opportunity and resources.
Beyond her official roles, Council Member Wallace has been a trusted leader and volunteer throughout Smithfield and Johnston County, contributing her time and voice to organizations that promote civic participation, community service, and environmental stewardship.
We thank Doris Wallace for her leadership, service, and dedication to Smithfield…and for the impact she continues to make through public service and community involvement.
