Shaw University, founded in 1865, is the first historically black college in the South. Shaw is a private, coeducational, liberal arts university affiliated with the Baptist Church. The University awards degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The University stresses character development, which includes religious, cultural, social, and ethical values. Ultimately, Shaw University endeavors to graduate students with demonstrated competencies in their chosen fields of study.

| Shaw University is honored to be one of 12 UNCF-member institutions selected to receive $1 million in permanent endowment capital through The Dimon Fund to Advance Economic Opportunity.

Established through a historic $12 million gift from The James and Judith K. Dimon Foundation, the fund will strengthen the long-term sustainability of HBCUs and help build a stronger financial foundation for generations of students to come.

This investment in Shaw University supports our continued commitment to expanding opportunity, strengthening institutional excellence, and ensuring that our students have the resources they need to thrive.

| ShawU students David Obineme and Nicholas Mcdougall joined young leaders from across the state for the 12th Annual North Carolina Black Alliance Think Tank.

The gathering began at Shaw University, the birthplace of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which was formed in 1960 with the guidance of civil rights leader and Shaw University alumna Ella Baker, Class of 1927.

More than six decades later, ShawU’s legacy of student leadership and civic engagement continues. 🐻
