Your local utility may be a co-op, but that doesn’t mean you’re shielded from rising costs.

Electric cooperatives are not exempt from Duke Energy’s rate hike proposal. With most North Carolina co-ops purchasing a large share of their power from Duke, increases at the wholesale level can still hit your monthly bill.

An 18% rate hike could mean paying significantly more each month, adding up fast for families already feeling the pressure.

Data centers don’t just bring digital traffic, they bring years of noise.
From the moment construction begins, nearby communities can face ongoing disruption. These facilities take years to build due to their massive size and complex design, meaning the noise isn’t temporary, it’s long-term.
Between heavy equipment, constant construction activity, and the infrastructure needed to support these sites, noise pollution becomes part of everyday life for residents.
How much is too much when it comes to progress?
Communities deserve a voice and peace and quiet.

Duke Energy reported nearly $4.9 BILLION in net income in 2025, yet households could still be asked to pay more.

If regulators approve the proposal in summer 2026, customers could see their monthly utility bills increase by $20–$30 starting in 2027. At a time when families are already stretching every dollar, this raises a serious question about priorities and affordability.

Energy is a necessity, not a luxury. Our communities deserve transparency, accountability, and fair rates.

Data centers powering AI consume as much electricity as small towns. Utilities are racing to build new infrastructure to meet this generational demand.
But here’s the question:

Who pays for it?

In many cases, the cost is spread across ratepayers, meaning current residential customers help fund the expansion.

As AI grows, so will the demand for power. It’s time to have an honest conversation about who benefits, and who foots the bill.

Traditional data centers use massive amounts of water.
AI data centers use millions of gallons every single day.

That’s as much water as a small city of 10,000–50,000 people.
As AI grows, so does its environmental footprint.

Duke Energy has announced plans that could require up to $103 billion in new investments to support the rapid growth of data centers.
Data centers power the internet, cloud storage, artificial intelligence, and many of the apps we use every day. But they also require large amounts of electricity and new infrastructure.
When utilities invest in new power plants, substations, transmission lines, and grid upgrades, those costs are often reviewed by state regulators and can affect customer rates over time.

As North Carolina grows, it’s important to understand:
• How energy demand is changing
• How infrastructure is funded
• How rate decisions are made

Our goal is to provide clear, fact-based information so residents can stay informed and engaged in conversations about energy, affordability, and long-term planning.

🌎 NEW MAGAZINE ARTICLE 🌎

Through a free, Democracy Green–funded water testing kit, Brunswick County, NC resident Evelyn Johnson confirmed what her community feared, the well water she had been drinking her entire life was contaminated with dangerous levels of lead, sodium, and PFAS, toxic “forever chemicals” that never break down.

Evelyn’s story is rooted in a historically Black, land-owning community that has faced decades of exposure to legacy pollution.

Now, with the Trump administration’s cuts to environmental programs nationwide, communities like hers are losing the protections and resources they need to fight back.

Read Requiem for Environmental Justice by Piper Guinn to see how Democracy Green and community leaders like Evelyn Johnson are standing on the frontlines of the fight for clean water and environmental justice. Link in bio.
