TURN THE VOLUME UP 🔊: Raleigh’s October 6 City Council meeting is the next major opportunity for residents to put their views on a data center moratorium, and calls for a Community Benefits Agreement, on the public record. 📣

MAJOR UPDATE: At the same Raleigh City Council meeting where Democracy Green Executive Director Sanja Whittington, alongside other community members and organizations, spoke about data center development, Council later entered its scheduled closed session.

When Council returned, Mayor Janet Cowell announced that the City Attorney had been directed to draft a temporary six-month data center moratorium for Council’s consideration. The proposal is expected to come before Council on October 6, with an opportunity for public input.

Director Whittington’s comments raised concerns about potential impacts including PFAS, noise pollution and long-term community health effects, while calling for additional study, public education and protections as Raleigh determines how future data center development should move forward.

temporary data center moratorium.

After weeks of community organizing, research and public input, Raleigh City Council directed the City Attorney to draft an ordinance. Democracy Green is calling for a full review of heat, water, noise, energy burden, community impacts and community benefits before development moves forward.

Today’s announced $455 million North Carolina PFAS settlement with Chemours, DuPont, and Corteva represents one of the largest environmental settlements in our state’s history, and a historic step toward accountability for PFAS and GenX contamination.

We thank Attorney General Jeff Jackson and Governor Josh Stein for fighting for clean water protections and recognition for communities harmed by decades of contamination.

Now, we must ensure this settlement reaches the people most affected, especially private-well owners and families in rural, unincorporated communities throughout the Cape Fear River Basin. Community voices must help shape how these funds are distributed, and the public deserves transparency, enforceable protections, financial relief, and lasting access to safe drinking water.

The true measure of this historic settlement will not be its headline value alone, it will be whether impacted families receive meaningful and lasting relief.

Last night, Team Democracy Green went before the City of Raleigh to deliver our official position, data, and alternative solutions to the proposed teen curfew. But we didn’t just bring facts, we brought living proof of what true investment in youth looks like.

For years, our organization has been deeply committed to youth programming. Our Co-Founders originally developed and led “Noteworthy,” a classical music program taught in well over a dozen Raleigh Community Centers and multiple Boys & Girls Clubs, reaching hundreds of local youth.

Two of those students were Isaiah and his brother Mike. Today, ten years after attending our after-school program, Isaiah is our newest Regional Triad Advocacy Lead. Last night, he delivered his first-ever formal public comments, standing alongside his original mentors to advocate for the youth in his own hometown.

This is what long-term youth leadership development looks like. We were incredibly proud to stand up last night, and even prouder to see the next generation stepping up to lead.

In November 2025, Duke Energy requested an 18% residential rate increase over two years.

After thousands of North Carolinians spoke out, attended public hearings, and made their voices heard, the proposal was reduced to 11.6% in June 2026.

Now, as of July 2026, the proposed increase stands at 9.5%.

This shows that when communities get involved, public participation can have an impact.

But the process isn't over. The current proposal would still increase electric bills for many households. Staying informed and participating in the regulatory process continues to matter.

Every comment, every hearing, and every voice counts.
