1.5 million residents in North Carolina are food insecure, including 1 in 5 children (20%). Meanwhile, food businesses continue to fight to survive following a pandemic, inflation, hurricanes (Western NC), and other headwinds. These small businesses are the backbone of hospitality in communities throughout the US.

In 2022, we started supporting local restaurants and caterers to create healthy meals for organizations alleviating hunger on the frontlines. Church pantries, The Women’s Center, Meals on Wheels, Asheville residents, school programs, and more have received these meals.

This model benefits recipients, food entrepreneurs, and the community agencies.

Last week, thanks to Centene Foundation, WellCare of NC, and Carolina Complete Health, we worked with our partners in Asheville—nonprofit and Will Cisa, Director of Culinary at —to provide 2,000 Thanksgiving meals from to local residents.

Chef Will recently wrote us: “The opportunities Now Serving has provided us created more shifts for employees eager to help and increased the stability of our business during this hard time.”

We’re grateful for the support to do what our mission states: Strengthen communities through food service. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

After Helene’s devastating path through Western North Carolina, we sent 1,600 meals to Asheville from Raleigh (thanks ) and quickly realized we needed to do more. We created a new partnership with Will Cisa, Director of Culinary at and , providing 3,000 more locally made meals to residents.

Chef Will recently told us: “The opportunities Now Serving has provided us created more shifts for employees eager to help and increased the stability of our business during this hard time.”

Thanks to Centene Foundation, WellCare of NC, and Carolina Complete Health, we amplified the impact this week with 2,000 delicious Thanksgiving meals made at and packed/distributed by Food Connection. It was moving to a) finally get onsite in the mountains and, b) see people continue to work for North Carolinians experiencing hunger right now.

We’re grateful for the support to do what our mission states: Strengthen communities through food service. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Food + Wine gathers an exemplary lineup of chefs and vintners, but we need to highlight the hardworking hosts! They, too, are giving their time and energy to support our community meal program.

Former University of North Carolina basketball star Marcus Ginyard, known for his performance on the court and his commitment to community service, will act as MC. A wine lover with a passion for making a difference, told us, “I am honored to be a part of Now Serving’s marquee event. Their mission aligns with my values and I am excited to support a cause that not only addresses immediate nutritional needs, but also fosters long-term community relationships.”

Across the way in is Jermainia. Co-founder of Raleigh’s The Day Party with regular DJ gigs at Clockwork and other local spots, is the “connoisseur of all things crisp” who, when given the option, chose to play all four hours of this event (instead of just two). Committed to the mission, thank you. We’re excited to hear his sound throughout SH on Saturday.

Here’s what we’ll do with the money: Move meal production to Asheville, where The Scheffer Group restaurants , , and will make 6,000 new meals to distribute to residents who need them most right now. Food Connection will continue to coordinate with their local distribution channels for delivery.

It’s true, many Food + Wine participants host weekend brunches we crave. But Raleigh’s best breakfast? Mr. B***o serves that out of a food truck in a Valero parking lot at 220 Six Forks Rd. Sarah Frey and her crew churn out scrambled egg and cheese with black beans, pico, and your choice of protein in taco, burrito, bowl, etc. Delicious sauces and piping hot coffee round out this straightforward, superb gem in the city’s food scene.

On Oct. 19, Sarah will pair with Jackie Adams, featured recently in the WRAL video about Now Serving, to create a unique dish. A former food truck operator, Jackie is our organization’s primary meal maker, cooking more than 6,000 meals per week from her commissary kitchen to deliver to community agencies for distribution. She is the backbone of our meal program and we’re lucky to have her showcase some food of her own at Food + Wine next month.

See you soon at Smoky Hollow! Less than 250 tickets (only 59 VIP) remain for our biggest annual fundraiser.

Our second favorite part of Food + Wine—after the proceeds raised to create new community meals—are the collaborations. Sunny from and Jake from team up again (remember their oyster medley last year?) to serve a special dish on October 19.

Since last fall, Sunny and his team celebrated another year at his flagship on S. Wilmington St. and a first anniversary at Olivero, his downright delectable spot in Wilmington (worth a trip alone). Meanwhile, Jake and crew recently announced the news of a Lawrence mega world headquarters coming to downtown Cary with “a brand new menu we’ve been working on that leans more into our own unique style of cue and hospitality.” See you there.

We also hope to see you Saturday, Oct. 19 for our Now Serving Food + Wine fest in Smoky Hollow. Only 250 tickets remain in our link in bio.

The party has expanded. And you’re invited.

An exceptional collective of chefs and restaurants are gathering to support Now Serving’s community meal program. When paired together next month, Food + Wine is the only place where you can sample unique collaborations from the likes of St. Roch + Lawrence Barbecue, Stanbury + Hummingbird, or Figulina + Madre.

Not to mention delicious California-grown wines from Donelan, Rarecat, Sangiacomo, and Sojourn Cellars. Booze from Tito’s and beer from R&D. Coffee from Blackology and Pine State.

Buying a ticket supports our community meal program. Don’t have yours yet?Remaining tickets are in the link in bio.

This week, we’ll surpass 140,000 healthy meals delivered since 2022. We’re grateful for these incredible hospitality businesses and sponsors coming together for our mission. Thank you!

See you Saturday, October 19 in Raleigh’s Smoky Hollow.
