Congratulations to the Wildlife Resources Commission Coastal Fire Crew for completing their season in the Holly Shelter Game Lands!

The crew spent weeks training in the snow and ice only to be marching through coastal swamps with water up to their waists, drip-torches in-hand. Now that's one way to turn up the heat! Even after the state-wide burn ban was enacted, they managed to keep their momentum by completing 50 acres of Longleaf Pine restoration.

Fun fact: there are many species of native animals that benefit from Longleaf Pine habitats, perhaps most notably...is the Red-cockaded Woodpecker!

On behalf of the many folks (and animals) that will reap the benefits of this crew's hard work, we thank you and our partners for making all of this possible!

Congratulations to the Grandfather Ranger District Vegetation Crew for completing their season this past week doing Hurricane Helene Recovery work!

From day one, this crew was met with heavily impacted and infested forests. An array of Non-Native Invasive Species covered the Curtis Creek Campground and Meadow Loop Trail in the Grandfather Ranger District. Through hard work and determination, they treated and mapped over 27 acres.

We are so proud of the crew for all of the hard work they have done to increase biodiversity and allow native plants to start to repopulate these well-loved areas.

On Saturday, April 25th, CCNC Individual Placement Program Coordinator Rachel Robinson and five Individual Placements joined the The North Carolina Arboretum's Mountain Science Expo!

The team had a great time educating the community about native and invasive plants, as well as leading a cyanotype activity at our table. We had a lot of fun engaging with the community, and always love an opportunity to collaborate with the NC Arboretum!

Congratulations to the Appalachian Ranger District Vegetation Management Crew for completing their season this past week doing Hurricane Helene Recovery work!

When Hurricane Helene hit Western North Carolina, tree loss across the Pisgah National Forest left canopies wide open, allowing more sunlight to reach the forest floor.

Invasive species such as Multiflora Rose, Kudzu, Privet, Autumn Olive, and so many more thrived in the heavily impacted forests. This crew tackled the Non-Native Invasive Species, putting in hard work day after day. Thanks to them, native plants have the chance to thrive, and increase biodiversity!

We are so proud of them for always being goofy, having grit, and always cracking jokes on the toughest of days, in the densest thickets of thorny rose bushes!

This past winter season, CCNC’s Blue Ridge Parkway Trail Crew tackled the aftermath of Hurricane Helene head-on β€” clearing trail, restoring access, and making this historic corridor safe and passable again. Along the way, the crew faced just about every condition imaginable: endless chainsaw work, wildfires, snow storms, heavy winds, muddy days, cold mornings, and a whole lot of teamwork. Huge shoutout to this crew for showing up every day with determination, humor, and a whole lot of saw fuel.

Thank you to our partners Blue Ridge Parkway, Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, AmeriCorps for making this work possible and opening trails back up for visitors to enjoy!

A special shoutout to the Wildlife Resources Commission Piedmont Fire Crew for their hard work and dedication this past season!

Prescribed fire is no walk in the park. It's hot and heavy work, and these fire fiends burned over 1,000 acres of game lands between Jordan, Falls, and Caswell Game Lands, in addition to preparing nearly 100 acres of sites for future prescribed burns.

There are more than 2,000,000 acres of Game Lands managed by the Wildlife Resources Commission in North Carolina alone. The effort and resources required to intentionally maintain these lands are vast, so we can't thank our crew members and partners enough for their excellent contribution to our lovely state. Congratulations!

Congratulations to the Grandfather Ranger District Trail Crew for completing their season this past week while supporting Hurricane Helene recovery efforts!

This crew completed projects across the Grandfather Ranger District, including complex saw work to reopen impacted day-use sites, campgrounds, trails, and more. They cleared over 131 downed trees, brushed more than 4,605 feet of trail corridor, maintained over 40 campgrounds, and accomplished so much more. Because of their hard work and dedication, areas that were previously inaccessible due to Hurricane Helene can now be enjoyed by the public once again.

We are incredibly proud of this crew for showing up day after day with positive attitudes, grit, and a strong commitment to meaningful, impactful work. Cheers to them!
