Cane Fighting and Self-Defense

Limited number of canes available, bring your own if you can.

This class is designed to teach beginner-friendly self-defense with a cane or other walking stick. The class is designed to be useful for people who are differently abled, but is open to people of all levels of physical ability. It will focus on the basics of blocking, striking, using the line of the body, and managing distance.

It is taught by two instructors with teaching ranks in multiple martial arts. Akiima Nicholls Shields has a teaching rank in Esgrima de Navaja, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and Escrima/Arnis, as well as extensive experience in Aikido, Tai Chi, and cane fighting. Ian Shields has a teaching rank in Wun Hop Kuen Do, Kajukenbo, and Escrima/Arnis, as well as in Aikido, Tai Chi, and cane fighting.

VIRTUAL CLASS - Street Medicine and Resistance Herbalism - Cold-Related Injuries
This class teaches street medics how to prevent their own injury in the cold when serving their community at actions (climate or resistance-related), as well as how to treat cold-related injuries in their communities.
The herbalism portion is based on scientifically-grounded herbalism and peer-reviewed studies.

Participants can expect to learn the basics of disaster preparedness including creating a home kit, go bag, and responding immediately from near and far. See examples of items for all kits in a hands on experience. Learn about ways to plug into responses and different roles to play to support affected communities through a mutual aid lens. In the current climate, mutual aid is how communities will get to the other side.

Raleigh’s Self-Defense Collective for Radical Action & Power (SCRAP) invites you to join us for another free and accessible self-defense training!
Join us at RUMAH on Sunday, November 23rd from 11am-1:00pm for a training in DE-ESCALATION AND BASIC WEAPONS EVASION!

November’s self defense training will cover verbal de-eacalation and the very basics of evading and protecting yourself against perpetrator who is using a gun or knife to threaten your safety.

(Part Two)
This continuation of our classes on De-escalation and Boundary Setting focuses on more fraught, stressful, and potentially dangerous interactions, including those with manipulative predators, those in active mental health crisis who may be a risk to themself or others, counterprotesters and agent provocateurs, and those actively in substance use-related crisis.

There are more than 770,000 unhoused people in the United States. Our communities need help. We need more street medics ready to act when and where there is a need. This weekly course, Street Medicine and Herbalism for Activism, will train participants in the skills they need to serve their communities in a safe(ish), risk-aware, and scientifically grounded fashion. The Raleigh Boxing Club (RBC) is back for Round 3! Join us at RUMAH for another FREE introductory boxing class and come get a taste of the Sweet Science. This month we’ll be going over basic defense and the two elemental punches: the jab and the cross. Our class is beginner friendly and open to all ages; it will NOT an intensive course. Come ready to learn, come ready to sweat, and most of all, come ready to LOCK IN!
