A Little Laughter, a Little Warmth, and a Whole Lot of
KY Colonel Caring

In the Central Kentucky Chapter, we take service seriously โ€” but we never take ourselves too seriously. Thatโ€™s why when President Thompsett, who also moonlights as a clown with the Shriners (and a partโ€‘time menace to good order and dignity), decided to have a little fun with our brother Jerry, nobody was surprised. Concerned? Maybe. Amused? Absolutely.

Jerry showed up expecting a normal day. Instead, he was greeted by Thompsett โ€” red nose, big grin, and enough mischief in his eyes to qualify as a weather alert โ€” presenting him with a โ€œjustโ€‘becauseโ€ gift bucket.

Inside?
A blanket and other care items.
Not just any blanket โ€” the kind that says, โ€œWe noticed itโ€™s been cold, and weโ€™re not letting you freeze like an abandoned lawn chair.โ€

Because thatโ€™s who we are.
We look after our community, yes โ€” but we also look after each other. Even if it means letting a Shriner clown deliver the care package.

Jerry got a laugh. Thompsett got to beโ€ฆ well, Thompsett. And the Chapter got another reminder that fellowship isnโ€™t just meetings and minutes โ€” itโ€™s warmth, humor, and showing up for one another in small, meaningful ways.

Even if it comes wrapped in a blanket and delivered by a clown.

A Story of Giving: The Heart of a Kentucky Colonel

In Kentucky, the title of Colonel has never been about rank โ€” it has always been about responsibility. A Kentucky Colonel is expected to lift others, to strengthen the community, and to show up when kindness is needed most. And in the Central Kentucky Chapter, that spirit isnโ€™t just tradition โ€” itโ€™s a weekly practice.

This spring, the Chapter came together to assemble and donate Derby and Bourbon Oaks baskets, each one crafted with care, pride, and the unmistakable generosity that defines the Commonwealthโ€™s highest honor. The baskets werenโ€™t just gifts; they were symbols โ€” reminders that service is most meaningful when it is personal.

When the baskets reached their destination, the response was immediate and heartfelt. A handwritten note arrived, addressed to the Chapter, carrying gratitude that spoke to the impact of their work. It read:

**โ€œDear Colonel Thompsett and the Central Kentucky Chapter,

Thank you for the wonderful Derby and Bourbon Oaks baskets. You helped the honored awardees over $1,000. Thank you!

We appreciate your continued support and all that you do to bring Colonels together weekly.

Sincerely,
Heather Campbellโ€**

For the Colonels, this wasnโ€™t just a thankโ€‘you โ€” it was a reminder of why they gather, why they give, and why they continue to serve. Every basket, every meeting, every act of support strengthens the bonds between Colonels and the communities they uplift.

In Kentucky, service is a legacy.
In the Central Kentucky Chapter, it is a living, breathing commitment โ€” one that grows with every act of generosity, every shared moment of fellowship, and every handwritten note that says, simply, thank you.

At the Central Kentucky Chapterโ€™s quarterly meeting on May 13, 2026, Colonels heard a powerful reminder of what service truly looks like. Our guest speaker, Stacy Taylor, from the American Red Cross, shared stories that showed how far compassion can reach โ€” from blood donations that travel across the country to volunteers who show up for families on the worst day of their lives.

Stacey explained how a single blood donation can help someone in Bowling Green, Hardin County, or even as far away as Juneau, Alaska โ€” and how the Red Cross app lets donors see exactly where their gift made a difference.

She also highlighted urgent volunteer needs in Kentucky: support at weekly MEPS briefings in Louisville and help for a major Yellow Ribbon event in Lexington this August. These roles ensure military families know theyโ€™re never alone.

But the moment that stayed with everyone was her story of a house fire response โ€” a family who lost everything, including 13 pets. A simple Red Cross debit card allowed them to buy toothbrushes in their favorite colors, warm socks, and the small comforts that make hope feel real again.

Since July, the Southโ€‘Central chapter has responded to more than 220 home fires โ€” 28 in Hardin County alone. Stacey urged everyone to share one vital message: after a fire or disaster, call 1โ€‘800โ€‘REDโ€‘CROSS. Help comes because someone makes that call.

The Red Cross also offers free handsโ€‘only CPR classes, homeโ€‘fire safety education, and proactive disasterโ€‘response training so communities can be ready before the next emergency strikes.

The Colonels left the meeting reminded that service isnโ€™t always grand โ€” sometimes itโ€™s a warm pair of socks, a reassuring voice, or a volunteer who shows up at just the right moment.

If your organization would like a presentation or wants to explore volunteer opportunities, reach out to the Red Cross and learn how you can be part of this lifesaving work.
