There are people who believe in the power of books. And then there was Dolly Parton, who did something about it. ❤️📚

Inspired by her beloved father, who never had the opportunity to learn to read or write, Dolly created the Imagination Library with a beautifully simple idea: put books directly into the hands of children. What began in her Tennessee hometown grew into a worldwide movement that has given millions of children the chance to discover the joy of reading.

Dolly once said, “You can never get enough books in the hands of enough children.”

As Friends of the Racine Public Library, we understand exactly what she meant.

In 2023, the American Library Association awarded Dolly Honorary Lifetime Membership, its highest membership honor, recognizing her extraordinary commitment to books, reading, literacy and learning.

A book is never just a book. It can spark curiosity, offer comfort, open a new world or plant the first tiny seed of a dream. And libraries make those possibilities available to everyone.

Dolly gave the world unforgettable music, enormous joy and more rhinestones than we could ever count. ✨ But among her greatest legacies is something wonderfully simple:

She helped children fall in love with books.

For that, readers — and Friends of libraries everywhere — will always be grateful.
