On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the Indigenous peoples who have cared for and continue to care for the lands and waters where we live. We believe that creating opportunities to learn from Indigenous voices is one part of working toward the more just and compassionate world we envision.

We’re grateful to the Racine Dominican Sisters for installing a new Land Acknowledgment statue overlooking the prairie and Lake Michigan on the Siena Campus. The eagle and accompanying plaque invite reflection on the Three Fires People, the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi, as well as other Indigenous peoples with longstanding relationships to this land.

Our Bookstore also always offers resources exploring Indigenous perspectives on social and environmental justice and community building. And this November, we’ll welcome Mark Freeland, a member of the Bahweting Anishinaabe Nation, for a virtual retreat, "Michigaming: Lessons from Anishinaabe Understandings of the Big Sea." Together, we’ll explore Anishinaabe place names, relationships to water, and understandings of our interconnected world.

There’s always something new to discover at Siena Retreat Center. In addition to retreats organized by Siena Retreat Center, we welcome outside facilitators and organizations who bring their own retreats, workshops, and programs to our campus.

Many of these Hosted Retreats are open enrollment, offering opportunities for anyone interested to join these gatherings, learn from new facilitators, and connect with others in our wider community.

Explore upcoming Hosted Retreats on our website and connect directly with the retreat organizers for more information and registration: sienaretreatcenter.org/hosted-retreats

Spiritual Direction - According to the Sea

"Waves
need none of our prescribing,
no scheduling,
no neat calendar
from hour to hour
or century to century.
Relentless,
compelled,
faithful (if you will),
they seek
and hound
or haunt
the shore,

rhythmed
only by the wind,
ineluctably
to rejoin the sea,
indistinguishable
from what
in fact they are."

Join us in celebrating our amazing Executive Director, Claire Anderson! Today is her 15-year work anniversary at Siena Retreat Center, and we can't imagine this place without her! Our staff, volunteers, board members, and all the guests who come through our doors have felt her care, compassion, and dedication over the past 15 years. Sometimes the right image finds you.

While sitting at her desk working on how to share The Feathers of Grief and Joy, our marketing director had been thinking about the retreat and her own recent experience of grief, mingled with moments of joy. It has been confusing at times, holding both.

Later, she stepped outside for a walk to clear her head and found these two feathers lying untouched on the pavement. She didn't look for these feathers, and she didn't stage them. It felt like a little gift, a sign both for marketing the retreat and a gentle nudge for herself telling her that everything would be ok!

Join Trebbe Johnson at Siena Retreat Center to explore making space for sorrow, beauty, wonder, and joy.
